27th October 2007

Cloudy and mild to start but windy in the second half so quite chilly.

Smart and tidy, much improved since my first visit. The pitch looked good but they have the privilege of an adjacent bit of land on which they can train and warm up. I always think the clubhouse resembles a scout hut but this has been done up as well this season, with a new wooden floor, neutral decor, and a flat-screen television (take note bar steward, Martin). However, as Alan [Beecham] pointed out, the outside still looks like a scout hut.

I only had a cup of tea. Laura usually samples the food but decided to stay at home and ‘do her homework’, although it may not have been a coincidence that West Ham were on television, of course. I suspect their food was not up to my standards as reflected in Richard Giles throwing his on the ground.

Again much improved and free, which surprised me. It was here that I had previously asked for a refund having been given a single sheet.

Certainly a game of two halves. The first was a good display, we got into a winning position and looked the better side. At the start of the second half, I can only describe what happened as six or seven minutes of madness, conceding three goals. I couldn’t decide if we were that bad or they were that good. Hopefully we can show something else against them in the two games soon.

Ian Hayes – our ex-skipper leading by example.

Quite a few of them turned out. I sat in the grumpy old men stand, as usual but the crowd on the opposite side were apparently hostile and aggressive, not the nicest bunch. They were really rude to Glynis after the game when she asked them to move a car, and this despite the fact they had won.

Not that bad, although a dubious penalty in the first half and he didn’t seem to want to come out for the second half, keeping everyone waiting. I felt he struggled to keep up with play but can’t blame him for the defeat, unfortunately.

The only good thing was that Paul was on orange juice and lemonade, so I didn’t have to drive home. Oh, and spotting Richard Giles burger-less.

Obviously the result – how things can change in the course of a game.
