27th August 2007

Sunny spells. Quite cloudy. Barely any wind. Generally a pleasant Bank Holiday Monday afternoon to watch a good game of football.

Better than my last visit. New fencing and a new turnstile has turned it into a rather nice looking ground. We had to park in knee-high grass however, which was the only down-point.

We had only been at the ground for ten minutes before disaster struck. No chips with curry sauce! The only reason I came in the first place. The burger bar ladies were very apologetic and promised to bring back the curry sauce for our next visit. In the end, I decided to have a portion of chips (minus curry sauce) and a cheese burger. Both were rather tasty but the burger was rather small. So, overall, a seven out of ten for cuisine.

Didn’t see any on sale anywhere on entry and only saw one or two in the hands of a few of the local fans, so their sales techniques certainly need improvement.

In one word, poor. Struggled to get any decent attacking moves going at all in the first half and looked shaky at the back. Too many long balls forward, which were easy for the Deal defence to handle. I expected a totally different performance in the second half after hearing some of the shouts from our dressing room. However, it was not to be. Once again we failed to get the ball down on the floor and string a few passes together. The one time we did, we won a free-kick in a dangerous position and almost scored from the resulting shot. Our goal came against the run of play but at least it was a legitimate goal, unlike their ‘penalty’ and 98th minute winner.

Tough decision as no one played well from start to finish. Both wingers looked dangerous at times but my vote goes to Tom Adlington, who did well to keep their best player (number ten) under control for most of the game.

Quite a few of them of all ages. Produced a fair bit of noise whenever Deal looked like scoring, which was quite often.

Well, where to start? Didn’t give a single free-kick for pushes in the first half but gave every single one there was in the second. Should have booked a Deal defender for bringing down Joe Neilson from behind. And although he didn’t have a great view of the alleged hand ball, he could see that the ball was smashed straight at Ross from a few yards away, making it impossible for him to get out the way. Added on nothing at the end of the first half despite two occasions where a player was down injured for a couple of minutes each and then added on eight minutes at the end of the second half. Heaven knows where that came from.

Buster’s goal. One of Hythe’s only good moves, a great ball to the back post, met by a well placed header. Plus the player’s celebrations with the fans were great to see.

No chips with curry sauce: disaster! Poor performance and a 2.1 loss: a double disaster!
