The Big Man Returns!
Hythe Town FC are delighted to confirm the return of Shaun Welford, who this evening has re-signed for the Cannons from Ryman North side, Cray Wanderers.
Talking to the website this evening, a clearly very pleased Tim Dixon said - “It gives me great pleasure to announce the signing of Shaun Welford. Both Darren and I have known Shaun for some time now, having been with him at Dover Athletic where he had one of many impressive spells in his career.”
“I remember during that time watching Shaun play in a reserves game at Ramsgate and after scoring a hat-trick, I recommended him to then Dover Manager, Andy Hessenthaler, who at the time was looking for a striker. Since that time at Dover he has also enjoyed massive success for Maidstone United and Hythe Town amongst others, before starting this season at Cray Wanderers.”
“His goalscoring record speaks for itself, but he will give us much more than that. His presence in the dressing room, his passion and enthusiasm is infectious, and if you were going into battle you’d have him on your shoulder, well, we are in a battle.”
Shaun’s record for the Cannons last season was a stunning 38 goals in 51 appearances, including a hat-trick in each of the last two games of the season.
The news follows hot on the heels of Ashley Miller’s departure to Folkestone Invicta, after our neighbours made a recent seven-day approach, a move that was also completed this week.
Tim continued - “Sadly we lost Ashley to Folkestone as well this week, but Shaun became an immediate target. His experience is very important as well and you only have to look at the impact Paul Booth had at Folkestone recently, I see Shaun doing something similar here not only for the rest of this season, but the season after as well.”
“He and his family love the club and he is right up for his next challenge with the Cannons, welcome home Shaun! I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Ashley for his time and efforts in his latest spell with the club."
Two other new faces added to the squad last week were winger, Rhys Lawson and defender, Joe Kennett. Rhys returns to the club after making ten appearances during the 2013/14 campaign and scored the ‘Goal of the Season’ on his debut for the club last time out!
Joe is an experienced defender, with Ryman South experience at Whitstable Town, Herne Bay and Ramsgate, he has also captained Canterbury City.
Tim said - “Rhys has played for the Cannons before and is an exciting player who I have been talking to for quite a while and needs little introduction."
"Joe has signed from Whitstable and is a good, honest, hardworking and versatile defender, who will only make us stronger at the back and will no doubt seize his chance when he gets the opportunity.”
Rhys appeared in Saturday’s draw at Ramsgate, with Joe also in the squad that day, all three players will be in the squad for Saturday’s (17th) crucial home game with Carshalton Athletic, kick-off 3pm.
So it’s a warm welcome to Joe and of course a big welcome back to both Rhys and Shaun!
