Hythe Town 1-1 Corinthian-Casuals

Bostik League South

Saturday 28th April 2018

Hythe Town were unable to hold on to claim a place in this season’s play-offs as they conceded a last-minute goal in their 1-1 draw with Corinthian-Casuals at Reachfields on Saturday afternoon.

The game started tensely as there was so much at stake for both sides with chances limited in the first half. The first two opportunities fell to the visitors as firstly after eight minutes the ball came out to Josh Uzun but he side-footed over the bar. Uzun was involved in the next attack as he crossed to Harry Ottoway whose glancing header went just wide.  The Cannons had to wait until the 22nd minute for their first serious effort as Liam King played the ball out to Darren Oldaker who shot over. Hythe’s best attempt of the half came on 32 minutes as King played the ball to Zak Ansah whose curling attempt forced Casuals keeper Gareth Williams to save at full stretch palming the ball around the post for a corner.

Casuals were still looking dangerous as Gabriel Odunaike broke free in the penalty area but he was dispossessed by the advancing Hythe keeper Will Godmon. The ball came out to Ottoway whose attempt was deflected over the bar. Just on the stroke of half-time Godmon was forced to block again as Fraser Walker advanced into the penalty area.

The second period started with Hythe on the attack as Charlie Webster blasted a shot that stung the hands of Williams. Both sides were having opportunities as at the other end Mu Maan unleashed a shot that went wide from 20 yards. With twenty minutes to go Ansah saw Williams off his line and attempted to lob the keeper who just managed to get his fingertips to the ball to prevent it going into the net and substitute Jerson Dos Santos following up fired over.

With ten minutes to go Reachfields erupted as the ball was picked up by Ansah who buried it into the corner of the net to give Hythe real hope. At the same time news came in that Ashford United had equalised against Walton Casuals which meant at that time Hythe would finish in fourth. Casuals pressed for the equaliser as Nathan Daly, under pressure, pulled a shot wide and then Odunaike turned but his attempt was diverted over the bar by Godmon.  However, there was a huge sting in the tail as the game moved into injury time Ottoway sneaked in at the far post to equalise for Casuals from a very tight angle. News also arrived that Walton Casuals has beaten Ashford so Hythe could only claim seventh place-just outside the play-offs on goal difference.

Hythe, if they maintain this form, will be a real threat for promotion next season and should be proud of their season.

East Grinstead Town 0 Hythe Town 3

Bostik League South

Saturday 21st April 2018

Hythe Town kept their play-offs alive as they eventually cruised to a 3-0 win at a hot and sunny East Grinstead Town on Saturday afternoon.

However, The Cannons had to overcome a lively, enthusiastic, and young East Grinstead team who caused real problems particularly in the first period. Hythe were to create the first opportunity on five minutes as a Ryan Palmer corner was headed wide by Liam King at the far post.  The Wasps had their first effort two minutes later as a shot from Leo Mazzone was blocked by Hythe keeper, Will Godmon and Ryan Johnson was on hand to clear the ball away. Hythe were ahead on eleven minutes as King got the ball and fed Zak Ansah who neatly curled a shot into the corner of the net.

Despite having fallen behind the Wasps, with their pace, were creating chances as after thirteen minutes Alex Gaggin, who was proving a real handful, turned in and forced Godmon to save. Godmon was to clear quickly finding King who ran in rounding East Grinstead keeper Dan Smith slamming his shot against the upright. There were chances coming at both ends as a Darren Oldaker deep free kick was headed over by Chris Kinnear and then at the other end Michael Wilson played the ball through to Stephane Bombelenga but he looped his effort over the bar. This was followed by Ainsley Everett who worked his way in but shot over. One more chance for the Cannons saw Ansah have a shot deflected away for a corner.

The second half started in the same pattern as first. Hythe’s King pulled the ball back to Kinnear but his attempt was deflected wide and then Gaggin got the ball into Will Hoare but he scooped over. On 52 minutes Hythe took the wind out of the host’s sails as Kieron Campbell tormented Wasps right back Oliver Boulding forcing the defender to bring him down in the penalty area. Up stepped Oldaker who nonchalantly chipped over the diving Boulding and into the net.   East Grinstead did have a chance to narrow the gap as Karn Miller-Neave weaved his way into the penalty area but fired wide.

It was Hythe who then cruised through the rest of the game to ensure the three points. In fact, they were three ahead on 70 minutes as substitute Jerson Dos Santos picked up the ball on the edge of the area and lashed the ball home to put the game out of the host’s reach. Ansah was denied by an interception by Sam Rolph. Shortly after, Salvyn Kisitu crossed into Dos Santos whose attempt was deflected wide and finally a minute into injury time a curling free kick from Oldaker drifted just over the bar.

Hythe took all three points and move up into fifth place. All now depends on the last league game of the season next Saturday at Reachfields against Corinthian-Casuals. Any three from four in the mix could qualify for the play-off positions to join Greenwich Borough who have already secured their place in what is an exciting end to the season.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Charlie Webster, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer (Josh Stirman 75 mins), Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah (Mitchell Chapman 90 mins), Liam King (Jerson Dos Santos 68 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Zak Ansah 11 mins, Darren Oldaker 53 mins (pen), Jerson Dos Santos 70 mins.

Hythe Town 5 Chipstead 3

Bostik League South

Saturday 14th April 2018

The Hythe Town march towards the play-offs continued on Saturday afternoon in an amazing 5-3 win at home to Chipstead at Reachfields.

It was the Cannons who looked the more dangerous throughout the first half and were ahead on only four minutes as a Darren Oldaker free-kick was not cleared by the Chipstead defence but fell to prolific goal scorer Zak Ansah who was free and able to slot home easily. Hythe continued to press as Chris Kinnear lofted a shot over the bar and then a strike by Ryan Palmer curled on to the cross bar and away. Oldaker was then to put a pass into Kieron Campbell who also lifted his shot high over the bar. Chipstead had to wait until the 20th minute before troubling the home defence as Billy Carney worked his way clear but scuffed his shot wide.

It was the Cannons who continued to look the more likely as Liam King surged into the penalty area but his final effort went wide and then a Palmer corner was headed over by Charlie Webster. Campbell was then to move forward but his shot was cleared only to King who couldn’t quite get the ball back from a tight angle. On the counter attack after 43 minutes and very much against the run of play Chipstead got the equaliser as Eddie Dsane found himself clear and made no mistake putting the ball past Hythe keeper Will Godmon and into the net to ensure the game was level at the interval.

Within five minutes of the restart, Hythe took a two-goal lead as firstly after 47 minutes a melee in the Chipstead area saw the ball ping around like a pin-ball as Hythe had a number of attempts cleared away before it finally was put in to his goal by defender Matt Warren.  Within two minutes King picked up the ball on the edge of the area and curled his majestic shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The visitors did have a couple of opportunities as a speculative shot from Carney from 25 yards sailed over the bar and then Danny Cumber broke free but spooned over when it looked easier to score.

Ansah was then to have two opportunities to increase his goal tally as firstly he managed to get a shot away that went wide and then he pounced on a defensive mistake but this time he shot straight at Chipstead keeper Michael Sealey.  However, Chipstead didn’t give up as Dylan Cascoe shot over the bar and then Dsane got through the Hythe defence and was one on one with Godmon but his shot looped over the keeper but also over the bar. However, Hythe were to increase their lead on 69 minutes as Campbell’s persistence was rewarded as he broke through the Chipstead defence and forced the ball home.

The game should have been over but the visitors would not lay down and die and reduced the deficit on 72 minutes as Dsane picked up the ball and sent a dipping shot just under the cross bar and into the net.  However, Hythe regained their three-goal lead on 77 minutes as substitute Jerson Dos Santos got onto the ball on the edge of the area and finished neatly to make it 5-2. The goal scoring was not over as Chipstead yet again narrowed the gap as the Hythe defence failed to clear the ball and Dean Lodge helped himself and slotted home. There was a chance at either end in the last five minutes as Chipstead threatened with Dsane beating Ryan Johnson to the ball but shot straight at Godmon and then at the other end Campbell neatly chipped over a defender and then ran on but found his final effort easily saved by Sibley.

The win meant that the Cannons moved five points ahead of Walton Casuals in the last play-off place with two games to play. Casuals however have a game in hand. Hythe have an away game next Saturday at East Grinstead Town.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Charlie Webster, Chris Kinnear (Henry Arnold 75 mins), Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah (Josh Stirman 81 mins), Liam King (Jerson Dos Santos 67 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town-Zak Ansah 4 mins, Matt Warren (OG) 47 mins, Liam King 49 mins, Kieron Campbell 69 mins, Jerson Dos Santos 77 mins. Chipstead-Eddie Dsane 42 & 72 mins, Dean Lodge 83 mins.

Hythe Town 3 Sittingbourne 2

Bostik League South

Wednesday 11th April 2018

Hythe moved into the play-off places as they overcame Sittingbourne in a 3-2 win at Reachfields on Wednesday evening.

The first half belonged to the visitors as they piled pressure on the hosts. However, the first opportunity came from the Cannons after four minutes as Kieron Campbell picked up the ball and sent in a curling shot that rattled the cross bar. Sittingbourne waited until the eleventh minute for their first attempt as a Kane Rowland effort forced Hythe keeper Will Godmon to palm the ball around the upright. Rowland was soon to have another attempt that this time looped over the target. The Brickies continued to press as a looping free kick from ex Hythe player Dan Parkinson from 25 yards sailed just over. Sittingbourne continued to attack as Sefyettin Akdeniz cut in from the right and forced Godmon to block. The ball rebounded out to Chris Webber who fired over.

However, the Cannons were unlucky not to take the lead on 21 minutes as Campbell fed the ball into Zak Ansah whose strike was deflected onto the inside of the post and spun away for a corner. Despite this effort Sittingbourne continued to look the more likely as Akendiz headed down but this was held by Godmon and then Akendiz should have done better as he met Tom Loynes cross but couldn’t get the ball on target. Akendiz was proving a handful as he forced a save from Godmon as the half went into injury time. On the stroke of half time Darren Oldaker found Mitchell Chapman who headed just wide.

The second half started in the same manner as a melee in the Hythe penalty area saw Godmon spill the ball but it eventually went out for a corner. Sittingbourne were deservedly ahead on 49 minutes the Hythe defence failed to clear and Fabrice Blewordah slammed the ball home. This seemed to spark the Cannons into action as they responded with an equaliser only two minutes later as Liam King crossed in from the right to Campbell on the far side. He played the ball back to Chris Kinnear who blasted home. On 64 minutes the Cannons were ahead as the ball found it’s way to Chapman who powerfully hooked the ball into the net.

The whole pattern of the game had changed with Hythe in the ascendency. Ryan Palmer struck a shot that went just wide and then the hosts increased their lead on 77 minutes as Campbell passed into Ansah who unleashed a shot that sailed into the top corner for his 17th goal in 16 games. Sittingbourne were now on the ropes but were getting the odd chance on the break as Lewis Chambers fired wide. However, it was Hythe who were looking more dangerous as Oldaker drove the ball which was spilled by Sittingbourne keeper Harry Brooks but there was no one there to take the opportunity and then Oldaker curled a free kick from the edge of the area over the bar.  There was one last scare for the Cannons as Rowlands smashed the ball home after 89 minutes under heavy pressure from the Hythe defence but it was too little to late as Hythe hung on to the three points.

Hythe now move up to sixth place as they look forward to the visit of Chipstead to Reachfields on Saturday.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Michael Turner (Henry Arnold 51 mins), Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Ryan Palmer (Jerson Dos Santos 87 mins), Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Liam King (Josh Stirman 61 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town-Chris Kinnear 51 mins, Mitchell Chapman 64 mins, Zak Ansah 77 mins, Sittingbourne- Fabrice Blewordah 49 mins, Kane Rowland 89 mins.

Greenwich Borough 1 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 7th April 2018

Zak Ansah got yet another double as he got a very late spectacular winner with virtually the last action of the game in a 2-1 win at Greenwich Borough on Saturday afternoon.

It was Hythe who dominated the first half creating the vast majority of the chances. After four minutes Hythe had their first opportunity as Liam King had a shot blocked with the rebound coming to Oldaker whose attempt ended in the same way. Greenwich had to wait until the 13th minute for their first meaningful chance as Kaka Dembele sent a free kick well wide of the target. It was the visitors however who were to continue to press. Chris Kinnear played the ball into King but Greenwich keeper Michael McEntegart dispossessed him before he could get his effort on goal. Kieron Campbell was then to get the ball to Zak Ansah whose strike stung the hands of McEntegart.

On the half hour Darren Oldaker crossed into Kinnear whose bullet header was cleared off the line by Sam Corne.  Hythe were ahead on 33 minutes as a poor back pass from Rian McLean was pounced on by Ansah who ran in, stole the ball and slotted home.  There was one more effort from Greenwich before the break as a long-range shot went straight at Hythe keeper Will Godmon.

The second half started with a free kick from Ryan Palmer glanced wide by Connor Sanders. The next quarter of an hour saw stalemate between the teams before Travis Gregory launched a shot high over the bar. Hythe were still creating chances as Campbell jumped on a loose ball and forced a full stretch save from McEntegart. However, the hosts were now looking brighter as Gregory had a deflected attempt pushed around the post by Godmon and from the resultant corner from Dembele, he looped a free header over the bar.

Hythe were unlucky not to get their second on 71 minutes as Campbell broke into the penalty area and passed into Ansah whose effort went under McEntegart but the keeper managed to recover and claw the ball away.  This was followed by another break from Campbell who created space for himself before firing wide.  With a quarter of an hour to go Greenwich were level as Hythe failed to clear the ball which ended up with the league leading scorer, Jack Barham who fired home for his 33rd league goal of the season. Greenwich continued to press but the Hythe defence stood firm to restrict Greenwich to one attempt on goal as Junior Aikhionbare looped a shot high over the bar. Deep into injury time a free kick from 20 yards by Oldaker found its way to Ansah who turned the ball into the net from close range to seal the victory which maintains Hythe’s push for the play-offs.

The gap to the play-offs is now down to one point as Hythe look forward to a fixture at home on Wednesday night (11th April 2018) against Sittingbourne with a 7:45pm kick off.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Michael Turner, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Connor Sanders (Mitchell Chapman 90 mins), Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Liam King (Josh Stirman 19 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Greenwich Borough-Jack Barham 75 mins. Hythe Town: Zak Ansah 33 & 90 mins.

Herne Bay 1 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Monday 2nd April 2018

Hythe came back from a goal behind to take all three points against a lively Herne Bay at Winch’s Field on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon.

The game started evenly with both sides having chances in the early minutes. The Bay were first to threaten after only 60 seconds as John Wisson sent the ball high over the bar from 20 yards. At the other end Keiron Campbell cut in from the left but his shot went straight at Herne Bay keeper Ben Hunter. Campbell created the next opportunity as he fed the ball into Ryan Palmer who fired across the face of the goal and away for a goal kick. The Bay had a similar attempt on 12 minutes as the ever-dangerous Tom Carlton drove wide. The Bay took the lead on 16 minutes as Danny Leonard broke through but his first attempt was blocked by Hythe keeper Will Godmon but he followed up on the rebound to plant the ball in the back of the net.

Darren Oldaker did threaten to bring the scores level but his free kick from the edge of the area went just wide. Bay had two chances to increase their lead as firstly Carlton forced a save from Godmon and then Connor Sanders was able to clear off the Hythe line when Connor Wilkins slammed in a header. Hythe began to look brighter as the half progressed with Palmer crossing into Liam King whose header was saved brilliantly by Hunter. On 40 minutes the Cannons were level as Oldaker got the ball to Zak Ansah who passed into the path of Chris Kinnear who moved in from the right sliding the ball home. One more chance for Hythe before the break saw Ansah feed King who curled his effort wide of the target.

The visitors had the best of the early exchanges of the second half as after 48 minutes Kinnear had a shot that was deflected into the arms of Hunter. A Palmer cross was met by King but his header looped over Hunter but also over the bar.  A melee followed in the Bay area which finally saw an Ansah effort cleared away. The pressure continued as Ansah cut in and sent the ball wide and then another Oldaker free-kick this time sailed over the bar. On the hour Godmon denied Carlton and soon after Bay were unlucky not to regain the lead as a Carlton corner was met by captain Ben Gorham who thumped his header against the cross bar. Hunter was then to save twice once from Ansah and then from a free kick from Oldaker.

The game was going from end to end with Godmon blocking a Wilkins attempt and then at the other end a Palmer cross was met by Campbell whose attempt was blocked by Hunter. However, Hythe were to get the winner on 81 minutes as Sanders looped the ball over to Zak Ansah who made no mistake and headed home his eight goal in the last five games. There was one last effort from the hosts a minute later as substitute Raphe Brown rammed a shot against the base of the right-hand post.  Hythe did have a chance to extend their lead deep into injury time as King charged forward and with only the keeper to beat he pushed the ball wide.

Hythe had done enough to gain all three points and close to gap to four points from the definite play-off places as they next travel to high flying Greenwich Borough on Saturday hoping to continue their great run.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Charlie Webster (Michael Turner 51 mins), Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Connor Sanders, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker (Mitchell Chapman 90 mins), Zak Ansah, Liam King, Kieron Campbell.

Hythe Town 2-0 Lewes

Bostik League South

Saturday 31st March 2018

Hythe Town continued their excellent form with a well earned 2-0 victory at home to Lewes on Saturday afternoon.

The first 25 minutes of the game saw both sides testing each other in a midfield battle without creating any opportunities apart from a twelfth minute attempt as Ryan Palmer cut in from the right but his final effort went over the bar. As the half progressed the Cannons started to take control of the game with Salvyn Kisitu cutting in and forcing Lewes keeper Chris Winterton to push the ball over the bar. Then two minutes later Palmer unleashed a curling shot that flew a couple of inches wide. Palmer and Kitisu were then to create an opportunity as the latter’s effort was pushed around the post by Winterton.

The league leaders had to wait until the 35th minute for their first meaningful chance as Ghassimu Sow found himself in space but sliced his shot wide and then Billy Medlock drove the ball straight at Hythe keeper, Will Godmon. However, on the stroke of half time, Hythe got the goal that their first half performance deserved. Liam King had a shot blocked by Winterton but it came back to Zak Ansah who made no mistake from close range.

The second half started with a free kick to the visitors in a dangerous spot just outside the area. Medlock curled his kick just over the bar and then it was Hythe who would continue to look the more likely. Ansah played the ball to Kieron Campbell who passed back to Ansah. The final effort looped just over the bar. This was followed quickly as Palmer found himself free but pushed his shot just wide of the left-hand post.  Hythe were then awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area which Darren Oldaker took but his kick went straight into the arms of Winterton.

Lewes upped the gears to look for an equaliser but the Hythe defence stood resolute under pressure. This was demonstrated by captain Ryan Johnson whose well timed tackle prevented Sow getting a shot on goal. At the other end Campbell had an attempt blocked and the rebound came back to him but he side-footed over the bar. However. Lewes were still creating chances as both Jonte Smith and Ronnie Conlon had shots blocked in a melee. With ten minutes to go, Hythe sealed the win. Oldaker played the ball across the penalty area finding Ansah who tapped home at the far post. This was the Hythe striker’s third brace in three games.

This seemed to knock the heart out of the visitors and it was the hosts who came nearest to getting a third. Oldaker shot just over the bar, Palmer got onto a loose ball but fired over and then he got the ball into Josh Stirman but it was blocked by Winterton. As the final whistle blew, Hythe had held onto three well deserved points in a performance where you could not fault any of the players. Their great effort has left the Cannons still well in contention for a play-off place.

Hythe now travel on Bank Holiday Monday to Herne Bay where they will be able to continue to build on their current fine form. Kick off for that game will be 3pm.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kitisu, Charlie Webster, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson (Connor Sanders 61 mins), Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Liam King (Mitchell Chapman 90 mins), Kieron Campbell (Josh Stirman 78 mins).

Whyteleafe 2 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 24th March 2018

In this stirring battle between two fringe play-off candidates it was the home side, still smarting from two recent away defeats who surged into the attack on their own plastic pitch giving the Hythe defence a torrid time. By the break the lively Lanre Azeez and Vance Bola had put their side two up, whilst the evergreen John Scarborough and his defensive partner Antonio Simeone were dealing effectively with the occasional Cannon's attacks.

On nine minutes Zak Ansah and Darren Oldaker might have made more of Town's first opportunity in the Whyteleafe area but three minutes later Azeez took advantage of similar confusion at the other end to break clear and draw Will Godmon before passing the ball into the far corner of the net.

Shrugging off the early substitution of Hassan Ibrahim the home side continued to bombard the Hythe defence. Long balls were being played out to the flanks and these were being backed up by attackers ghosting into unmarked positions in and around the area.

Ryan Johnson only just reached his keeper under pressure from one cross, Tom Hutchings headed just over from another and Azeez was only inches away close in from a dangerous low ball.

For Hythe Mitch Dickenson advanced through midfield to have his shot blocked but on 41 minutes Vance Bola seized on a loose ball and unleashed a terrific shot into goal from well outside the penalty area. The same player then headed over from close range and there were worried looks on the faces of the Hythe management team as the players took a much needed half time break.

Whyteleafe started the second period brightly but Kieron Campbell reminded all of his ability with a long-range effort that was well struck but straight at keeper Kyle Merson. If the sizeable Hythe following were dreading the next 40 minutes, Sam Denly and his colleagues were made of sterner stuff and they brought on two key substitutes who were to change the course of the game. New signing Connor Sanders immediately impressed with his strong midfield presence coupled with some very effective long throw-ins, He was joined by youngster Josh Stirman who seemed to have been saving up his speed and stamina after his lengthy spells on the Hythe bench. Charlie Webster dropped back to full back but was to make a whole series of overlapping runs forward with a performance worthy of an MOM award.

Up front Zak Ansah and Ryan Palmer were now winning their battles and with Campbell and Oldaker running strongly into the heart of the home defence the game was turning dramatically.

When big Simeone had to leave the field the writing was really on the wall and although Scarborough found the time to get forward only to miss an absolute sitter, most of the time it was backs-to-the-wall stuff from his team. Oldaker gave Ansah a scoring opportunity which was well saved but when the same two combined on the 77th minute this time there was no stopping the prolific striker who stroked the ball home confidently to make it "game on".

Now the only weapon the tiring "Leafe defence were left with was some blatant time wasting, and impressive referee Tom Fell could be seen regularly issuing lectures and holding his watch up in the air. A whole series of corners, free kicks and long throws peppered the home defence with several shots being blocked by sheer weight of numbers. The equaliser was eventually to come though in all of that added stoppage time when Ansah forced the ball into the net in an area so crowded that few spectators knew who the scorer was.

As the whistle ended this pulsating contest both teams must have shared some disappointment. Whyteleafe had missed their chance to stay in the play-off race, whilst this never-say-die Hythe team surely had only needed a few extra minutes to finish off the job.

Hopefully Reachfields will reward them with a decent attendance this coming Saturday when league leaders Lewes roll into town.

Team: Will Godmon, Sylvan Kisitu, Keane Gillett (Josh Stirman 52 mins), Mitchell Chapman (Connor Sanders 52 mins), Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Charlie Webster, Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Whyteleafe – Lanre Azeez 12 mins, Vance Bola 41 mins. Hythe Town – Zak Ansah 77 & 90 mins.

Molesey 1 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Tuesday 20th March 2018

Hythe Town came away with three points in a 2-1 win at Molesey on Tuesday evening.

Both sides were slow to start with the first two opportunities coming for the hosts as firstly on eight minutes the experienced veteran Craig Lewington crossed over to Ross Chalke who headed over and then Ronald Sobowale turned and shot from the right-hand side with the ball going across the face of the goal. Hythe took a little time to settle but were ahead on 24 minutes as Darren Oldaker weaved his way through the Molesey defence releasing the ball to Zak Ansah who placed his shot neatly past home keeper Liam Allen.

Kieron Campbell, who throughout the game, tormented the Molesey back four closed in from the left but his final attempt went straight at Allen. At the other end Lewington put in another cross and as before Chalke headed over. On 42 minutes, the Cannons were two ahead as Oldaker again fed the ball into the path on Ansah who calmly rounded the goal-keeper and stroked the ball home. There was one more goal mouth incident at the other end as Dre Grobler received the ball in the penalty area but lifted his attempt over the bar when it looked easier to hit the target.

The Cannons dominated the second half as after 48 minutes a Ryan Palmer cross was deflected onto the cross bar by Grobler as he attempted to clear and then Oldaker curled the ball just around the post from the edge of the penalty area. A Palmer cross was headed towards goal by Mitchell Chapman but Lewington cleared off the Molesey goal line to prevent Hythe increasing their lead.

In the 68th minute a melee in the home penalty area saw Campbell, Ansah and Oldaker have attempts from close range blocked. The hosts had to wait until the 74th minute for their first meaningful attack of the half as a free-kick from Ryan David drifted over the bar. The hosts were reduced to ten men on 75 minutes as Ashby Charles received a second yellow card. The Cannons didn’t look threatened until the last action of the game which saw a Lewington corner headed home by Tayo Oyebola but it was too little too late and almost immediately after the goal the referee blew for full time.

It had been a comfortable win for Hythe as they move within four points of the play-off zone and are now looking forward to a trip to Whyteleafe on Saturday.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu (Josh Stirman 76 mins), Keane Gillett, Mitchell Chapman (James Nurden 88 mins), Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Charlie Webster, Kieron Campbell (Callum Phillip 88 mins).

Hythe Town 2 Cray Wanderers 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 10th March 2018

Hythe put in a magnificent performance, despite being reduced to ten men midway through the first half, as they showed grit and determination in a deserved 2-1 win at home to Cray Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Within the first two minutes both sides had an attempt on goal as firstly Darren Oldaker sent a free kick from the edge of the penalty area into the arms of Cray keeper Nick Blue and then at the other end Karl Dent had a shot deflected making it easy for Hythe keeper Will Godmon to collect the ball. Ryan Johnson was then to deny Cray as he dispossessed Sammy Dadson as he tried to get an effort away. It was the Cannons who were to take control of the game as Kieron Campbell charged down the left flank pulling the ball back to Ryan Palmer who side footed over the bar. However, Palmer was to put Hythe into the lead on 13 minutes as he picked up the ball 20 yards out and unleashed a superb shot that sailed into the top corner of the net giving Blue no chance.

Hythe continued to pile on the pressure with Palmer feeding the ball to Oldaker but he was unable to get the ball under control and fired over. Campbell, who was running riot down the left-hand side, cut in and drove the ball low but straight at Blue and then Oldaker curled a free-kick but that was also easily saved by Blue.  Then came a moment of controversy on 27 minutes as an off the ball incident saw a red card for Hythe’s Jerson Dos Santos. This could have had a negative impact on the hosts but they rolled up their sleeves up and battled hard creating the only opportunity in the rest of the half as Campbell crossed to Zak Ansah whose close-range attempt was blocked by the Cray defence.

The second-half started tightly but ten-men Hythe increased their lead on 53 minutes as Oldaker fed the ball to Ansah who calmly placed the ball home to make it 2-0. Oldaker was then to have an opportunity on 63 minutes as he lifted the ball over the bar. On a damp pitch the ten men of Hythe were to fight heroically as Cray pressed to get back in the game. A low drive from Ben Mundelle didn’t trouble Godmon and then Johnson, who marshalled his defence with great skill, was to clear away a dangerous cross from Dadson. From the resultant corner by Barney Williams was punched away by Godmon who was under pressure.

The resolute Hythe defence with Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Salvyn Kisitu and substitute Keane Gillett dominant restricted Cray to very few clear-cut chances. However, Cray were to get one back on 84 minutes as Charlie MacDonald broke free and with other options available decided to go on his own and plant the ball past Godmon in to the net.  One more scare as Dent pounced on a loose ball but he lifted his attempt over the target. Hythe were to deservedly hold on for a well-earned three points in which every player played their part in a fantastic team performance.

Hythe, who are now four points outside the play-offs, will now be looking forward to next Saturday’s game as they entertain Sittingbourne.

Team: Will Godmon, Michael Turner (Keane Gillett 45 mins), Salvyn Kisitu, Charlie Webster, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell (Callum Phillip 87 mins)

Hythe Town 1 Horsham 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 24th February 2018

Hythe and Horsham battled hard as the game ended in a 1-1 draw at a bitterly cold Reachfields on Saturday afternoon.

Horsham were to take a very early lead on two minutes as Alfie Rogers hit a shot from the edge of the area which seemed to be covered by Hythe keeper Will Godmon but he fumbled the ball and it crossed the line to open the scoring. The Cannons had to wait until the eighth minute before their first effort as Kieron Campbell moved in from the left and fired wide of the target. On 14 minutes Ryan Palmer sent in a cross that tested Horsham keeper Josh Pelling who off balance managed to palm the ball away. Horsham counter-attacked with the final effort from Toby House rattling against the cross bar.

There were chances coming at both ends as Horsham’s Charlie Farmer headed over the bar and Chris Kinnear, at the other end, pounced on a loose ball which he sent just the wrong side of the upright. As the half progressed it was the hosts who were looking the more likely as Darren Oldaker came in from the left but scooped his effort over the bar but he was to bring the scores level as Hythe were awarded a free-kick just outside the area. Oldaker’s kick curled around the wall into the corner of the net with Pelling getting nowhere near the ball. One more chance for the Cannons, one minute into injury time at the end of the first half, as a Charlie Webster free-kick was met by Kinnear whose attempt forced a save from Pelling.

The second half started with Hythe on the attack as Oldaker curled a free kick the wrong side of the post. However, the visitors were still causing problems as a header from Farmer went straight into Godmon’s arms. Campbell then fired a shot into the Horsham penalty area but Ryan Worrall was able to get his body in the way and the ball deflected for a corner. The game was going from end to end as Tom Tolfrey broke through but despite having options he chose to shoot. His effort went wide. The ever-dangerous Campbell created the next chance as he cut in from the left but his curling attempt drifted wide.

Horsham were picking up the pace and Farmer sent a snap shot over the bar and then Rogers broke in forcing Ryan Johnson to produce a superb covering tackle to prevent any attempt on goal. Then came the controversial moment of the game as Kinnear and Scott Kirkwood met in what looked like a fifty-fifty challenge. As Kirkwood went down injured, the home crowd watched in disbelief as the referee produced a red card for Kinnear. It will be interesting to see the challenge in the video of the game to make a judgement.  Hythe were able hold on with ten men and did create a chance in injury time as Palmer turned and shot forcing a save from Pelling.

Hythe remain in seventh place now six points outside the play-offs. Next Saturday, weather permitting, the Cannons travel to Molesey for another league fixture.

Team: Will Godmon, Salvyn Kisitu, Charlie Webster, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos (Michael Turner 82 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town-Darren Oldaker 29 mins. Horsham-Alfie Rogers 2 mins.

Hythe battle hard to steal the points ...

Hastings United 2-3 Hythe Town

Bostik League South

Saturday 17th February 2018

Hythe Town came away from Pilot Field with a 3-2 win in an eventful and entertaining game against a lively Hastings United side on Saturday afternoon.

Hythe absorbed some early pressure from Hastings and in the eighth minute took the lead on the break as Darren Oldaker played the ball onto Ryan Palmer who placed his shot perfectly past Hastings keeper Charlie Horlock into the corner of the net. Another opportunity fell for the Cannons as Palmer had a run down the left leaving a number of home defenders in his wake. He crossed the ball over to Zak Ansah who couldn’t quite get his shot away at the far post. It was Hastings who were then to dominate the rest of the half. Their first chance came on 18 minutes as Davide Rodari cut in from the left but his right footed effort drifted wide. On 20 minutes a free kick from Jack Dixon was headed over by Dayshonne Godling from close range.

Hastings captain Sam Cruttwell then got into the action as firstly he had a shot blocked by Henry Arnold who did well to get his body in the way and then had a long-range effort that sailed over the bar. This was followed by a free-kick from Cruttwell that sailed into the arms of Hythe keeper Will Godmon. Hastings continued to press as Godmon held a shot from Golding and then one from Rodari. The Hythe keeper was then to excel himself as he made a fantastic save from a close-range attempt from Dixon. On the balance of play it was amazing that Hythe came in ahead at the break but Hastings had squandered a number of chances.

The second half was only one minute old when Oldaker put a ball into Chris Kinnear but his header went over the bar. However, it was the hosts who were to continue to get the more meaningful chances. Golding played the ball into Calum Davies but the Hythe defence cleared for a corner and then a free kick from Cruttwell went high and wide from the edge of the area. At the other end Oldaker ran in but his final effort also sailed over the bar. Hythe went two ahead on 67 minutes as Oldaker hit the perfect free-kick from 25 yards that curled into the top corner of the net.

Ansah broke in from the right but his final effort was well stopped by Horlock and then on 76 minutes Hastings pulled a goal back as confusion in the Hythe defence allowed Dixon to stroke the ball home. Hastings were now throwing everything into attack as they searched for the elusive equaliser. Firstly, Davies turned and shot straight at Godmon and then the referee saw an offence in the Hythe penalty area and controversially pointed to the penalty spot. However, the resultant penalty was blasted high over the bar by Dixon allowing Hythe off the hook.

On 87 minutes as Hastings pushed everything forward, Hythe caught them on the break as Oldaker broke free and fed the ball through to Ansah who calmly placed his shot into the corner of the net to make it 3-1.  To the amazement of the crowd, the referee played over ten minutes of injury time and five minutes in another controversial decision was made by the referee as he awarded another penalty for Hastings. This time Golding made no mistake with his kick as he sent Godmon the wrong way. Then came another decision that some could claim to be harsh as Hythe were reduced to ten men with Arnold sent off for throwing the ball at Golding in retaliation.

Hythe were to hang on for all three points to narrow the gap between them and the play-offs to five points as they sit in seventh place. Hythe’s next game is at home Horsham next Saturday. Kick off is 3pm at Reachfields.

Team: Will Godmon, Michael Turner (Salvyn Kisitu 54 mins), Henry Arnold, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos (Charlie Webster 54 mins), Kieron Campbell (Elliott Capel 90 mins).

Scorers: Hastings United - Jack Dixon 76 mins, Dajon Golding 90 mins (pen). Hythe Town – Ryan Palmer 8 mins, Darren Oldaker 67 mins, Zak Ansah 87 mins.

Cannons fire in six......

Hythe Town 6 Shoreham 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 10th February 2018

The Cannons blew away Shoreham in a 6-0 win at a very damp and muddy Reachfields on Saturday afternoon.

It was Hythe who dominated proceedings as they swarmed over their opponents for vast chunks of the game. Their first opportunity came as Darren Oldaker had a shot blocked and the ball came back to Jerson Dos Santos whose attempt was collected by Shoreham keeper James Broadbent. Ryan Palmer, who continued his recent great form, put in a dangerous cross which was intercepted by Harvey Dunk who was lucky not to put through into his own goal as the ball went just over the bar.

Shoreham had to wait until the 20th minute for their first effort as Sean Roddy put in a shot but it didn’t test Hythe keeper Will Godmon. Hythe were back on the attack as Michael Turner pulled the ball in from the right into Kieron Campbell whose effort was pushed wide at full stretch by Broadbent. The chances kept coming for the hosts. A Palmer cross was headed into the arms of Broadbent before Hythe finally took the lead on the half hour as a Turner cross was brilliantly glanced in by the head of Oldaker. Another Palmer cross threatened just before half time finding Campbell who drove the ball wide of the target. The Cannons went into half-time wondering why they were only one goal ahead.

The second half started in the same manner as the first with Dos Santos laying the ball back to Chris Kinnear whose shot was tipped over well by Broadbent. Kinnear was to have another attempt which this time was blocked by Broadbent. Shoreham did then have an effort as Thomas Johnston broke through but side footed wide of the target. Then came number two on 57 minutes for the Cannons as Palmer got the ball over to Zak Ansah who forced the ball home from close range. Number three came three minutes later as Ansah couldn’t get a shot away and it came to Dos Santos who bundled the ball home.

The Cannons continued to turn the screw as Campbell flicked the ball onto Ansah who fired just wide. It was 4-0 after 66 minutes as Campbell got the ball over to Ansah who neatly placed his shot into the corner of the net. A couple of chances then came for the visitors as Andrew Mensah came in at the near post and headed the ball just wide and then a dipping shot from Ross Myers rattled against the cross bar. However, on 78 minutes Campbell collected the ball, took a couple of steps and unleashed a drive from just outside the area that sailed into the top corner to make it five for the Cannons.

At the other end Roon Quadri hit a long-range effort just wide but Hythe then put the “icing on the cake” with four minutes to go as Oldaker got the ball, took his time and planted his shot into the net to make it 6-0. Godmon prevented Shoreham getting a consolation in injury time as he saved from Mensah.

Hythe finished the game with a satisfying win moving up into seventh place as they move onto an away game next Saturday at Hastings United.

Team: Will Godmon, Michael Turner, Henry Arnold, Chris Kinnear (Mitchell Chapman 59 mins), Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer (Elliot Capel 73 mins), Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell (Josh Stirman 80 mins)

Cannons fight back.....

Hythe Town 2 Herne Bay 1

Bostik League South

Tuesday 6th February 2018

The Cannons came from behind with two second half goals to steal all three points against lively Herne Bay on a cold evening at Reachfields on Tuesday.

Hythe, who were without Michael Turner, had made two temporary signings before the game with Henry Arnold and Darren Oidaker joining on loan from Gillingham. The hosts were the first to show as Ryan Palmer put in a dangerous cross in the very first minute but Jerson Dos Santos couldn’t quite reach the ball to divert it towards goal. Herne Bay were to have their first effort on two minutes as Thomas Carlton had a shot that went wide of the target. This was followed by a driving run from Palmer that ended with the Hythe winger sending a shot that was deflected wide for a corner.  The Bay were to take the lead on six minutes as Jake Embery stole the ball from Arnold and ran through to send his shot past Hythe keeper Will Godmon and into the net.

It was now the visitors who were looking the more likely to increase their lead as they piled the pressure on the Hythe defence. Connor Wilkins crossed to Embery but he side-footed wide and then Richard Ismail also sent the ball the other side of the post. The chances were coming thick and fast as Carlton hit a long range shot again wide of the target. On 33 minutes it took some strong defending from Godmon and Arnold as they blocked an effort from Junior Aikhionbare who had got on the end of a cross from Carlton. Slowly, Hythe were getting more into the game as Charlie Webster delivered a cross that was headed by Dos Santos into the arms of Bay keeper Ben Hunter. A similar effort at the other end saw Carlton cross to Aikhionbare whose shot was held by Godmon. A similar move by the same players with the same result came three minutes later.

Hythe were creating chances of their own as a back heal from Dos Santos played in Palmer but his shot went wide. On 41 minutes Zak Ansah fired over from a tight angle and then controversy struck as Campbell appeared to be brought down in the penalty area but the appeals were turned down. On the balance of play Herne Bay could have been further ahead but they had to settle for a one goal lead at half time.

The early exchanges in the second half were even with Bay getting the first opportunity a minute into the half as the ever-dangerous Bradley Schafer fired a shot across the face of the goal and away for a goal kick and then at the other end Oldaker forced a save from Hunter. The Bay had a golden opportunity on 51 minutes as a cross from Jack Steventon was met by Embery but he screwed his attempt wide from close range. A superb pin point through ball from the impressive Oldaker got through to Ansah but he couldn’t quite get enough control to make a meaningful effort. Palmer put in another cross that this time was headed wide by Dos Santos but his next effort on 58 minutes went deep to the far post and Campbell was on hand to force the ball over the line and bring the scores level.

The following passage of play saw the pressure for a winner come from the Bay as Steventon headed a cross from Schafer that was easy for Godmon to collect and then they got the ball in the net. Carlton curled the ball into the far corner from the edge of the area. However, the referee had already whistled for an infringement on the edge of the area and a Bay free kick. Bay substitute Miles Cornwell had a shot well blocked by Godmon. However, Hythe were still threatening as Palmer curled a free kick just wide but the Cannons were to get the winner on 78 minutes as Campbell played the ball to Oldaker who threaded the ball through to Ansah with the striker planting the ball past Hunter and into the corner of the net.

Herne Bay didn’t give up and put some pressure on the Hythe defence but they stood strong led well by Ryan Johnson and Mitchell Dickenson. On the break Campbell blasted a dipping drive that was brilliantly tipped over by Hunter and then at the other end Aikhionbare forced a great save from Godmon.

Hythe were to hold on and take all three points in an entertaining game which have gone either way. They now prepare for Saturday’s home game against Shoreham full of confidence.

Team: Will Godmon, Charlie Webster, Henry Arnold (Mitchell Chapman 65 mins), Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Palmer, Darren Oldaker, Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos (Callum Phillip 87 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town – Kieron Campbell 58 mins, Zak Ansah 78 mins. Herne Bay- Jake Embery 6 mins.

Carshalton Athletic 2 Hythe Town 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 3rd February 2018

The Cannons were unlucky to come away from high flying Carshalton Athletic with nothing after a performance full of heart as they went down 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

It was the hosts who started the brighter and had the majority of the early chances. Their first effort came on seven minutes as Jordan Cheadle got the ball over to the far post where Danny Dudley headed wide. Peter Adeniyi then threaded the ball through to Raheem Sterling-Parker who planted his shot wide of the target. Hythe had to wait until the 16th minute for their first attempt as Zak Ansah also placed the ball wide.

However, at this stage of the game the hosts continued to look the more dangerous as Paris Hamilton-Downes hit a speculative shot over the bar. As the half progressed, Hythe began to come more into the game as Kieron Campbell rifled an attempt that took two deflections before going out for a corner. On 32 minutes Carshalton were ahead as Sterling-Parker broke in from the right and slammed the ball into the far corner of the net giving Hythe keeper Will Godmon no chance. A dangerous inswinging corner from Cheadle was then palmed away under pressure by Godmon.

Hythe were level on 36 minutes with a classic goal as Ryan Palmer pulled the ball in from the right finding Jerson Dos Santos whose powerful header found the net from close range giving the Carshalton defence no chance to clear the ball away.  The Cannons continued to press and five minutes before the interval Chris Kinnear unleashed a drive that took a deflection and rattled against the top of the cross bar and out for a corner. Two more chances for the Cannons before the break saw a Palmer cross find Kinnear but his header was deflected wide and then a Palmer free-kick drifted over the bar.

Hythe were first to threaten in the second period and on 49 minutes Dos Santos broke into the penalty area from the right but he shot into the side netting. The Cannons proved resilient in defence as they withstood a period of pressure from the hosts who created a couple of chances during that period. Firstly, a cross from Tommy Bradford found Ola Sogbanmu who stumbled before he could get a shot away and then Sterling-Parker found himself free but Godmon came off his line to block. Hythe were still causing some problems in the Carshalton defence as Palmer pulled a shot just wide.

A controversial moment that decided the game came in the 74th minute as the referee saw an infringement by Godmon in the penalty area and awarded a spot kick. Up stepped Omar Kamora who sent Godmon the wrong way to give the Robins the lead. The Cannons pressed for an equaliser but couldn't create the vital opportunity and really Carshalton should have sown up the win right on full-time as Kormora found himself completely free but could only send his final shot wide.

The Cannons had put everything into their game and were unfortunate not to come away with something. They now face Herne Bay in a League fixture at Reachfields on Tuesday evening with a 7:45pm kick-off.

Team: Will Godmon, Michael Turner, Charlie Webster, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Keiron Campbell, Mitchell Chapman (Callum Phillip 83 mins), Zak Ansah, Jerson Dos Santos, Ryan Palmer.

Scorers: Carshalton Athletic – Raheem Sterling-Parker 32 mins, Omar Kormora 73 mins (pen). Hythe Town - Jerson Dos Santos 36 mins.

Battling Cannons get the points.....

Hythe Town 3 South Park 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 27th January 2018

The Sam Denly era started with a gutsy and spirited 3-2 win against a very physical South Park side on a damp afternoon at Reachfields on Saturday.

The early exchanges were even and limited to a number of speculative attempts from long range. Hythe’s Jerson Dos Santos had the first effort after seven minutes as he hit a shot from the edge of the area straight at South Park keeper Callum Thomas. The visitors had to wait until the 14th minute for their first effort as James McElligott threaded the ball through to Joe Jackson who fired over the bar. Callum Emptage was next to threaten as he had a shot that was already going wide deflected away for a corner. As the half progressed South Park began to look the more likely as McElligott launched a shot high over the bar.

On 27 minutes saw some some superb defending from Jerald Aboagye as he dispossessed Chris Smith who broke free and then Smith played the ball over to McElligott who couldn’t quite redirect the ball towards goal on the far post. However, on 32 minutes South Park took the lead as Joe Jackson got on the end of a cross and smashed the ball home. One effort before half time for the Cannons to get back in the game saw a Mitchell Dickenson volley into the arms of Thomas. On the stroke of half time South Park’s right back Jerry O’Sullivan received a red card for a nasty challenge on Kieron Campbell.

The second half started with Hythe trying to take advantage of playing against ten men as on 48 minutes Campbell, who became more dangerous as the game progressed, drove the ball straight at Thomas. Then on 50 minutes Hythe were level as Ryan Palmer scored another spectacular goal as he moved in from the left dipping his shot into the far side of the net. However, South Park were still looking dangerous as Jackson broke free but couldn’t get a shot away before Hythe keeper Will Godmon blocked. With the next attack on 66 minutes they were ahead as substitute Keiran Lavery also broke free and planted ball past Godmon and into the net.

As the rain was getting heavier, Hythe were looking for the equaliser. Campbell again moved in and slammed the ball just wide and then Palmer curled a free-kick but that again went just the wrong side of the upright. South Park were still threatening on the break as a shot from Dan Moody was deflected wide. From the resultant corner Moody headed wide. However, it was Hythe who were to draw level once again on 83 minutes when Palmer put in a deep cross and the ball was redirected into the net by Dickenson at the far post. With only two minutes left on the watch Hythe were to complete the turnaround as Chris Kinnear moving through the middle laid the ball off to Campbell who surged forward and fired the ball home. Hythe were to hold on for the seven minutes of injury time to complete an impressive win in front of 235 people most of whom went home happy.

Hythe remain in eighth place and can now look forward to next Saturday’s trip to high flying Carshalton Athletic.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Callum Emptage (Mitchell Chapman 21 mins), Chris Kinnear, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Kieron Campbell, Charlie Webster, Zak Ansah (Callum Phillip 81 mins), Jerson Dos Santos (Elliott Capel 90 mins), Ryan Palmer.

Back from the dead to steal a point......

Ashford United 3 Hythe Town 3

Bostik League South

Saturday 20th January 2018

At half-time, The Cannons looked dead and buried as they found themselves three down but a remarkable second half come-back saw Hythe snatch a point in a 3-3 draw at Ashford United on Saturday afternoon.

It was Hythe who had the best of the early possession creating their first effort after only two minutes as Ryan Palmer had a shot neatly gathered by Ashford keeper, George Kamurasi. Ashford created their first opportunity on twelve minutes as an Andrew Dalhouse went into Hythe keeper, Will Godmon’s arms. Hythe continued to press and a Grant shot did not test Kamurasi. The Ashford keeper, who was recovering from conceding nine goals at Cray on Wednesday evening denied Zak Ansah on 23 minutes as he palmed a shot around the upright for a corner.

Palmer was then to feed the ball into Jerson Dos Santos whose shot was deflected wide. However, as the half progressed the hosts were looking more dangerous as substitute Brandon Williams shot straight at Godmon. On 31 minutes Ashford took the lead as the ball was stolen by Jordan Wright who got the ball over to Brandon Williams who blasted the ball home. Things got worse for the Cannons on 37 minutes as they fell further behind. Another deep cross from Wright this time found Shomari Barnwell whose firm header sailed into the net. Kamurasi was to prevent Hythe getting back into the game as a Dos Santos cross was headed down by Grant but the keeper got down to save well.

As the game moved towards the interval Hythe had three good chances to get back in the game as firstly a Ryan Palmer shot towards the far post cannoned off the cross bar and then a Charlie Webster cross found Kieron Campbell who headed into Kamurasi’s arms. Then on the stroke of half time Campbell got the ball to Ansah whose shot was blocked by Kamurasi. The ball eventually came out to Chris Kinnear who fired over. However, there was time for things to get even worse for Hythe as a cross was converted by George McClennan who hammered the ball home deep in injury time at the end of the half.

There was little to suggest in the early part of the second half that Hythe could get back into the game as Ashford pressed for their fourth without creating any real clear-cut chances. However, Hythe were to create a couple of opportunities as Ben Wilson broke in from the left and forced Kamurasi to push the ball round the post.  The turning point came on 59 minutes as ex Hythe player Pat Kingwell was adjudged to have fouled Grant in the penalty area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Wilson who sent Kamurasi the wrong way narrowing the gap. It was Ashford who looked more likely to extend their lead as they squandered two golden opportunities as McClennan crossed from the left finding Barnwell who headed over from close range and then another cross found Dalhouse who hooked the ball over the bar.

One more chance for the hosts as Wright broke free shooting straight at Godmon but then with nine minutes to go Hythe were awarded a free kick from just outside the area. Palmer placed his free kick perfectly as it sailed into the top corner of net to give the visitors more hope. Hythe were now going all out to find the equaliser that looked unlikely a little earlier with a Jerald Aboagye cross that was headed over by Ansah. The Cannons were not to be denied and when the ball came out to Wilson on the stroke of full-time he unleashed a shot that flew into the net to bring the scores level.

There was no more time for the Cannons to get the winner but there was considerable relief that they came away with a point. They now prepare for their next game at home to South Park next Saturday.

Team: Will Godmon, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Palmer, Zak Ansah, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Dave Cook 45 mins), Kieron Campbell (Jerald Aboagye 70 mins).

Battling Hythe get a point.......

Corinthian-Casuals 0 Hythe Town 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 13th January 2018

A battling performance from Hythe saw them come away from high flying Corinthian-Casuals with a hard-earned point in a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.

It was Hythe who took the initiative in the first half as dominated proceedings. Their first opportunity came after eight minutes as, the ever dangerous, Kieron Campbell ran in and unleashed a dipping attempt from 25 yards that rammed against the underside of the cross bar and out with Casuals keeper Danny Bracken well beaten. Ryan Palmer then fired a free-kick wide and with Hythe on the front foot Dean Grant broke in from the right but fired into the side netting. The Cannons were piling on the pressure as Palmer came in again from the right and shot towards the far post with Bracken pushing the ball wide for a corner with an outstretched hand.

The hosts had to wait until the 34th minute to have a meaningful effort as the ball came out to Max Oldham who forced Ryan Johnson to clear the ball off the line.  At the other end Jordan Johnson-Palmer threaded a ball through to Grant who laid the ball off to Palmer whose shot was just wide. Then came a moment of controversy as Johnson-Palmer went into a challenge. To the astonishment of the crowd, the referee adjudged it to be a dangerous challenge and showed the Hythe midfielder a red card. It will be interesting to see what the film of the game shows. Casuals did have one more opportunity deep into injury time as the busy Oldham blasted over the bar.

The second half saw more from Casuals as both sides had some opportunities the settle the game. Another shot by Oldham, who was a thorn in the Cannons side throughout the game, went wide and then at the other end Zak Ansah received a ball from Campbell but he also shot wide. Casuals were being held by the Hythe defence who remained resolute. Jack Strange got his head to an incoming corner but headed wide and then Gabriel Odunaike shot into the arms of Hythe keeper Will Godmon. Hythe were still creating chances to snatch the points as a Palmer cross was headed over by the impressive Chris Kinnear. The last twenty minutes saw both sides try to prise an opening but both defences prevented any clear-cut chances. One more chance for the hosts as Nathan Daly crossed into Terry Murray in the 87th minute who headed wide.

The game ended in a draw which on balance was probably a fair reflection of the game. Hythe stay in eighth place and now prepare for next Saturday’s local derby at Ashford.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Charlie Webster, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Chris Kinnear, Ryan Palmer, Dean Grant, Zak Ansah (Callum Emptage 69 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Hythe back to winning ways.............

Hythe Town 3 East Grinstead Town 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 6th January 2018

Hythe Town deservedly got all three points despite again being reduced to ten men in a 3-2 win at home to East Grinstead Town at a damp Reachfields on Saturday afternoon.

The game got off to an electric start with both teams threatening. After four minutes the Cannons had their first opportunity as a dangerous Kieron Campbell cross was just out of reach of the advancing Dean Grant but the ball drifted wide of the target. East Grinstead had their first effort a minute later as Jordy Mongoy hit a curling shot high over the bar. Hythe were lucky to remain on equal terms with Marcus Elliott pouncing on a defensive mix up but with the goal gaping slammed his attempt against the foot of the post. It was the Cannons who then started to take control and had the ball in the net on nine minutes as a Ben Wilson cross was headed home by debutant Chris Kinnear. However, the referee’s assistant was flagging as the ball had gone out of play so the goal was ruled out.

The game was almost one-way traffic at this stage as firstly Grant fed the ball to Ryan Palmer who lifted it over the bar and then Palmer returned the favour but this time Grant’s effort went into the arms of Wasps keeper Dan Smith. There was the odd opportunity on the break at the other end as substitute Isaac Hutchinson got a shot away but he miss-hit his attempt high over the bar. The home pressure finally paid off as Palmer got the ball over to Campbell who surged in to the penalty area. His shot was diverted by Hythe’s second debutant Zak Ansah into the net to give the Cannons a deserved lead. Three shots followed as Campbell had a shot parried away, Ansah had another attempt deflected wide and Palmer shot against the post.

However East Grinstead were to draw level against the run of play on 32 minutes as Alex Gaggin pounced on a lapse in the Hythe defence and the striker coolly finished off the opportunity. Hythe were to regain the lead on 36 minutes as an exquisite curling shot from the edge of the area by Palmer sailed into the top corner of the net giving Smith no chance. There was one chance before the break for the visitors to level the scores as Elliott pulled back but Gaggin struck the ball over the bar.

The second period started more evenly with Ansah getting the ball back to Grant who passed on to Palmer but his attempt was blocked and then at the other end Oliver Boulding got the ball to Gaggin but Hythe keeper Will Godmon came out to block. Things took a turn for the worse for the hosts as Ben Wilson was adjudged to have brought down a visiting striker and was shown a straight red card. This was Hythe’s fourth red card in three games. The resultant free-kick from Hutchinson was blasted wide.  However, ten-man Hythe were to extend their lead on 62 minutes as Jerald Aboagye surged down the right pulling the ball back to Ansah who slammed the ball home.

The Wasps had a chance within a minute to get back in the tie as Temiloluwa Oladejo blasted a shot over the bar from 3o yards. However, it was the Cannons who looked the more likely. Palmer put Campbell in but her fired over and then Ansah played the ball back to Jordan Johnson-Palmer whose effort also sailed over.  With ten minutes left the visitors were to narrow the gap as Hutchinson fired a free-kick through the Hythe wall and into the net giving them a chance of getting a point. Hythe nearly extended their lead again as Campbell got the ball out to Charlie Webster but his shot was blocked by Smith and then the visitors tested the Hythe defence but Leo Mazzone’s header was held well by Godmon.

As the game came towards the close Webster got the ball into Grant whose shot was pushed around the post but deep into injury time East Grinstead should have got the equaliser as firstly Oladejo had a shot blocked by Godmon but the rebound was pulled wide by Elliott when it looked easier to hit the target.

Hythe held on for all three points and remain in eighth place as they look forward to next Saturday’s trip to high flying Corinthian-Casuals.

Nine Man Hythe get a point......

Guernsey 1 Hythe Town 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 30th January 2017

Hythe had to battle back from being reduced to nine men as they drew 1-1 against a young Guernsey team at Footes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

The game started with the Islanders looking the brighter as a looping cross after two minutes was headed wide of the target. However, the Cannons began to settle as a dangerous Ryan Palmer cross was deflected onto the post and away. Another attack followed on six minutes as a Ben Wilson cross was tipped away by Guernsey keeper Will Dennis with the ball going out to Mitchell Dickenson who headed wide. After only ten minutes Hythe were reduced to ten men as a reckless challenge from Will Thomas on Keanu Marsh resulted in the young Hythe defender being shown red in only the tenth minute.

However, it was Hythe who were the next side to threaten as a Dean Grant cross was tapped wide by Jerson Dos Santos. This was followed by a long-range effort from Kieron Campbell that flew wide of the target. Guernsey were to take the lead on 16 mins as Ben Wilson was adjudged to have brought down Marsh and up stepped captain Craig Young who slammed the ball home. The hosts could have increased their lead on 36 minutes as cross from Carlton Gauvain was met by Dave Rihoy whose glancing header went wide. One more attempt in the half saw Gauvain move in from the right but he sent his final effort high and wide of the target.

The second period saw Hythe dominate possession but were not able to create any meaningful chances until on the hour Jerald Aboagye threaded the ball through to Campbell but his eventual shot was easily blocked. Guernsey did press at times but never really tested Hythe keeper Will Godmon. They had a shot after 69 minutes that drifted well wide.  Substitute Jordan Johnson-Palmer got the ball through to Dos Santos who blasted high over the bar. Aboagye was then to get through but his final effort scratched the outside of the post and into the side netting.

Then came the controversial incident that could have finished the afternoon for the Cannons as Dos Santos who was just returning from a three-match ban appeared to have been brought down just outside the penalty area. However, the referee saw it as a dive and gave Dos Santos a second yellow card and Hythe were reduced to nine men.

Hythe showed character as they searched for an unlikely equaliser. Ryan Palmer curled a free-kick wide and then at the other end substitute Paris Pereira had a snap-shot that he also curled wide. The Cannons were to get the goal that would secure them a point after 80 minutes as a Palmer corner from the right was met by Dickenson who hammered his header home for his second goal of the season. There was a chance for each side in injury time to get a late winner as firstly Young curled the ball over the Hythe bar and then a Wilson corner went right across the face of the goal with nobody able to get in the right position to convert.

Hythe’s nine men had got a point that seemed unlikely when they received a second red card. They will now have to look forward to New Years Day as they entertain Herne Bay to get back into winning ways. Kick off at Reachfields is 3pm.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson (Charlie Webster 87 mins), Mitchell Dickenson, Will Thomas, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 81 mins), Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell (Jordan Johnson-Palmer 64 mins).

Hythe hold on for a point.......

Ramsgate 2 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Tuesday 26th December 2017

The Cannons had to come back twice to seal a point in a 2-2 draw in the Boxing Day game at Ramsgate on Tuesday afternoon.

Hythe were pinned back immediately as the Rams took the lead after only two minutes as Jake Mackenzie played the ball through to Alfie Paxman who with the Hythe defence leaden footed tapped the ball home. Hythe could have got back in the game on six minutes as Jordan Johnson-Palmer stole the ball and placed it through to Warren Mfula but the striker pulled the ball wide. This period of the game saw Ramsgate on top as they peppered the Hythe goal. Tom Chapman shot straight at Hythe keeper Will Godmon and then the ever-dangerous Alfie Paxman had a shot deflected wide. This was followed by another attack that saw Aaron Millbank pull the ball back to Liam Dickson who shot wide.

Hythe were to draw level on 26 minutes as Johnson-Palmer fed Dean Grant whose attempt rammed against the inside the post and into the net. This marked a change in the balance of the game as the visitors looked the more likely with Kieron Campbell surging through and his final effort was saved easily by Ramsgate keeper Luke Watkins. On the half an hour Ben Wilson had a free kick from 25 yards that curled but went over the target and then he put in a deep cross that found Dave Cook moving in but he headed over.

The game turned back towards the hosts on 33 minutes as on the break a ball was put from the right-hand side finding Paxman who neatly put the ball away. This gave the initiative back to the Rams as Paxman put in a cross that went around the Hythe penalty area like a pinball before Godmon cleared away. Paxman was continuing to cause havoc down the left-hand side as he crossed to Millbank who headed wide and then he surged through but his final shot went wide. Just before the break Ollie Gray fired a long range shot into the arms of Godmon.

The second period started with the Cannons drawing level on 48 minutes as Mfula got the ball to Grant who calmly placed his shot into the corner to bring the scores level. Soon after there was another melee in the Hythe penalty area which ended with Danny Lawrence blasting the ball over the bar. Hythe then had a period where they looked the more likely to get the winner as Campbell hit a shot straight into Watkins arms and then Grant had a shot deflected before it could threaten the goal. Then came the moment that put Hythe on the back-foot as Mitchell Chapman made a reckless challenge that resulted in a straight red card. Ramsgate now started to press with the one-man advantage but failed to create a clear chance as the Hythe defence stayed resolute and held on to take a point.

Hythe went up one place into seventh position in the table as they now prepare for the long journey to Guernsey on Saturday afternoon.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Mitchell Chapman, Warren Mfula (Sid Sollis 56 mins), Dean Grant (Ryan Palmer 90 mins), Kieron Campbell (Will Thomas 89 mins).

Scorers: Ramsgate - Alfie Paxman 2 & 33 mins. Hythe Town – Dean Grant 26 & 48 mins).

Hythe sink to defeat.....

Hythe Town 1-3 Phoenix Sports

Bostik League South

Saturday 23rd December 2017

There was little Christmas joy at Reachfields as Hythe produced a disappointing performance as they went down 3-1 at home to Phoenix Sports on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter of hour saw very little goal mouth excitement as both sides tested each other out creating very few chances. It was however Phoenix who created the first chances of the half as firstly on 19 minutes Christie Pattison fed the ball to Kweku Ansah whose rasping shot was well blocked by Hythe keeper Will Godmon. On 20 minutes a searching corner from Ashley Probets was headed over by Jack Barry but the referee was blowing for an infringement. However, the next attack on 26 minutes Ansah put Jeff Duah-Kessie through. He pushed the ball past Godmon and then followed the ball into the net to give the visitors the lead.

The Cannons had to wait until half an hour in before they threatened as a Ben Wilson corner from the left found Ryan Johnson at the near post and he back heeled the ball into the arms of Phoenix keeper, Steve Phillips.  At the other end Phoenix still looked dangerous as a Probets cross found Danny Young who looped his header into the arms of Godmon. Sid Sollis was then to break through for Hythe but as he rounded Phillips, the keeper got his hand to the ball to prevent a goal.  Godmon had to be at his best on 40 minutes as Tony Robinson threaded the ball to Pattisson but the Hythe keeper came out well to block. However, Phoenix were not to be denied and extended their lead a minute later as an initial save from Godmon came out to Gil Carvalho played the ball to Robinson who side footed home from close range.  Hythe were gifted a goal on the stroke of half time to give them hope as Kieron Campbell weaved his way into the penalty area from the left and his final cross was diverted home by Phoenix defender Jack Hopkins.

The second half started with a similar opportunity at both ends as firstly new signing Warren Mfula, who joined the club this week on dual registration with Dartford, pulled a shot wide and then within a minute Pattisson did the same at the other end. A couple of chances followed for the visitors as firstly Probets scooped a free kick high over the bar and then he crossed into Young who headed over the bar. Phoenix were unlucky not to extend their lead on 73 minutes as Duah-Kessie unleashed a shot that crashed against the cross bar. Then came the move that eventually took the game out of the Cannons grasp as on the counter attack Ansah fired home on the stroke of full time.

It was a miserable afternoon for the Cannons who dropped into eighth place and must now regroup quickly for their tie at Ramsgate on Boxing Day.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer (Charlie Webster 67 mins), Warren Mfula (Dean Grant 70 mins), Sid Sollis, Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town-Jack Hopkins (OG) 45 mins. Phoenix Sports-Jeff Duah-Kessie 26 mins, Tony Robinson 41 mins, Kweku Ansah 90 mins.

Hythe Town 2-1 Molesey

Bostik League South

Saturday 16th December 2017

Hythe came from behind to take all three points in a 2-1 against struggling Molesey on Saturday afternoon at Reachfields.

Kieron Campbell, who spent the afternoon tormenting the Molesey defence created the first opportunity after just one minute as he broke in along the left hand by-line before feeding the ball to Ryan Johnson whose toe poke was deflected wide. There followed three efforts from the visitors as firstly Anthony Kozakis broke in from the left but his shot was deflected wide and then Dre Groblar miss hit an effort well wide. This was followed by a tame free-kick by Jordan Smith that rolled into Hythe keeper, Will Godmon’s arms.

However on a quarter of an hour Molesey went ahead as Kozakis pounced on a defensive error and slammed the ball past Godmon. Their lead only lasted two minutes as Hythe hit back. Dean Grant crossed into Sid Sollis whose looped header went over Molesey keeper Liam Allen’s head and into the net. This seemed to spark the Cannons into action as they began to take control of the game as a Ryan Palmer cross was flicked on by Johnson to Mitchell Dickenson who fired straight at Allen.  Campbell continued to threaten down the left and on 32 minutes he was brought down by Grobler as he broke into the penalty area. There was little surprise that the referee pointed straight to the spot and Ben Wilson stepped up and sent Allen the wrong way to give Hythe the lead.

Within two minutes Molesey should have been even as again Kozakis stole the ball but his attempt went wide went it looked easier to hit the target. It was the Cannons who continued to dominate the possession as Sid Sollis blasted over from the edge of the area and then the ball came out Grant whose shot was deflected wide. This was followed by a long range effort from Palmer that sailed into Allen’s arms. There was one more effort at the other end as Craig Lewington laid off a free kick to Reis Stanislaus who screwed his effort wide.

The second period started with the same pattern with the hosts looking the more likely. Grant firstly broke free but fired wide and then a curling Campbell free kick from 25 yards was easily saved by Allen. Grant was again to threaten on the hour as he hit a left foot attempt just wide. Molesey did have some opportunities as Stanislaus broke free but did not test Godmon but the majority of the chances were coming at the other end with Johnson firing over the bar. Hythe were unlucky on 74 minutes as Wilson played the ball into Sid Sollis who dipping effort was tipped over superbly by Allen and then from the resultant corner Palmer crossed to Dave Cook who was denied by Allen.

Jordan Johnson-Palmer who was distributing the ball well in midfield sent Campbell free down the left. He surged forward crossing into Charlie Webster whose effort was blocked by Allen. Johnson-Palmer again fed the ball to Campbell who moved in but shot just wide. However Molesey threatened as time ticked away but the Hythe defence marshalled superbly by Dickenson with Jerald Aboagye looking strong on the right held firm preventing any meaningful chances and it was Hythe who came closest to extending their lead in the last minute as a deep Wilson free kick found Webster who slammed the ball into the side netting.

It was a hard earned three points that keep the Cannons in seventh place as they prepare for next Saturday’s home fixture against Phoenix Sports.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer, Dean Grant (Charlie Webster 74 mins), Sid Sollis, Kieron Campbell.

The Cannons don't fire at Cray............

Cray Wanderers 4 Hythe Town 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 9th December 2017

Hythe were given a harsh lesson on Saturday afternoon as they were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by a strong Cray Wanderers at a cold Hayes Lane.

The first ten minutes saw a battle in the midfield with both sides probing but with no clear opportunities and is wasn’t until 14 minutes when Cray created their first effort as a cross by Brandon Scott was held well under the cross bar and under pressure by Hythe keeper Will Godmon. Cray were slowly stamping their authority on the game as captain Lea Dawson got onto a loose ball but scooped it high over the bar. The hosts were ahead on twenty minutes as Aaron Rhule had a shot parried away by Godmon. Michael Power following up fired in from a narrow angle squeezing the ball past Godmon into the net.  The pressure was now all coming from the hosts as Rhule got his foot to the ball but it went over the bar.

The attacks were coming in waves as Scott broke into the Hythe penalty area requiring Mitchell Dickenson to cover well to keep the score at 1-0. The Cannons had to wait until the 31st minute for the first attempt of the game as Mitchell Chapman side footed the ball over the bar and then Dean Grant created some space to shoot with his left foot but it went straight into Cray keeper Andy McCorkell’s arms. However this was a brief respite as again Cray continued to look dangerous with Dawson playing the ball in but it was headed wide by Jay Leader.

However Cray deservedly increased their lead on 35 minutes with Scott catching the Hythe defence napping. He ran in rounding Godmon before placing the ball into an empty net. This seemed to shock Hythe into action as they created three chances before half time Chapman played the ball off to Charlie Webster whose shot went just wide and then a Ben Wilson free-kick floated just over the bar. With a minute to go until half time Hythe were unlucky not to pull a goal back as Wilson played the ball into Sid Sollis who curling attempt slammed against the cross bar.

Hythe were to make one change at half time with Chapman being replaced by Kieron Campbell and it seemed to be an inspired substitution as after 47 minutes Campbell charged in from the left rifling his final shot into the far corner of the net giving McCorkell no chance. The Cannons were unlucky not to draw level a minute later as a Wilson corner was met by Dave Cook but his header was cleared off the line. However this bright spot for Hythe ended and Cray took back control. Zak Henry drove the ball forcing Godmon to save well to his right and then the Hythe keeper had to tip over a free kick from Michael Frieter. Godmon was again in the action as on 57 minutes another free kick from Frieter found Power that forced him to push the ball away.  However a minute later the result was put out of Hythe’s reach as Dawson bundled the ball home in a packed penalty area from a corner to make it 3-1. It could have been four as Power who was causing havoc broke through but his shot was saved by Godmon who came very quickly off his line to narrow the angel.

Things got even worse for the Cannons on 83 minutes as substitute Jerson Dos Santos was shown a red card after an incident with Henry who received a yellow card. Substitute Ryan Palmer who looked bright for the visitors when he entered the game slammed the ball against the post on 86 minutes and then at the other end Frieter broke through but shot straight at Godmon. This was followed with another attack from Cray that saw Ralique Lawrence steal the ball from Cook and force another save from Godmon but the Wands were not to be denied a final goal deep into injury time with Jerome Frederico breaking free on the right. He moved in and slammed the ball into the far corner of the net to put the icing on the home cake.

It was a chastening day for the Cannons from which they must learn if they are to maintain their aspirations for the season as they stay in seventh place ahead of next Saturday’s game at home to struggling Molesey.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster (Ryan Palmer 60 mins), Dean Grant, Sid Sollis (Jerson Dos Santos 60 mins), Mitchell Chapman (Kieron Campbell 45 mins).

Scorers: Cray Wanderers - Michael Power 20mins, Brandon Scott 35 mins, Lea Dawson 58 mins, Jerome Frederico 90 mins. Hythe Town – Kieron Campbell 47 mins.

Hythe out of Velocity Trophy.............

Hythe Town 1 Hendon 2

Velocity Trophy 3rd Round

Tuesday 5th November 2017

Hythe were left to rue not making the most of their early dominance as they were knocked out of the Velocity Trophy in a 2-1 defeat at home to Bostik League Hendon on Tuesday evening.

It was Hythe who were to create the vast majority of the chances in the first half. Their first effort came as early as the third minute as Ryan Palmer broke through with his final shot going just wide of the target. Within another minute Hythe were to take the lead Sid Sollis broke through and despite having his shirt tugged he planted his shot in the corner of the net. Kieron Campbell was the next to threaten as he had a forceful shot deflected into the arms of Hendon keeper Tom Lovelock. The chances kept coming for the Cannons as Jerson Dos Santos was next to threaten. His attempt was blocked by the defence.

Hendon were however to equalise with their first attack of the half. They got the ball into the Hythe penalty area forcing Hythe keeper, Louis Lawlor into a double save however the second attempt rebounded to Keagan Cole who slammed the ball home. Sollis was then to be denied twice in quick succession by Lovelock as he jinked his way into the penalty area with his final effort well saved and then Sollis jumped on a defensive mistake placing his shot towards the far corner of the net only to see Lovelock get his fingertips to ball and divert it to hit the inside of the post and away.

The chances kept coming for the Cannons. Ben Wilson sent in a dangerous corner that ended with a Dave Cook stooping header that was cleared by a defender and then Campbell charged forward but had his final shot saved by Horlock. As the half entered the last ten minutes slowly but surely Hendon were coming more into the game. A free kick on the edge of the area from Zak Joseph was deflected wide and then a shot from Channing Campbell-Young was deflected over. Hendon were then to get the goal that was to prove the winner on 43 minutes as Kezie Ibe forced the ball home.

The second half was for more even than the first. With chances coming regularly at both ends. The Cannons had a golden opportunity on 49 minutes as Dos Santos fed the ball to Will Thomas whose shot was well saved by Horlock and following up Dos Santos had his effort blocked. Lawlor was also having a good game as Josh Walker surged through but his final effort was well saved by the number two keeper and he was then to deny Joseph. At the other end the ball came out to substitute Charlie Webster who drove wide. Wilson was then to put in a dangerous corner that was headed over by Sollis.

It was then the visitors who looked the more likely. Ibe pulled the ball back to Cole who curled it just over the bar and then Harly Wise saw Lawlor off his line and attempted to lob the ball from the well out but the young keeper back peddling managed to tip the ball over the bar. Lawlor was to save well from a snap shot by Cole deep into injury time and it was Hendon who held on and go through to the next round.

The Cannons can now concentrate on the league as they face a journey to high flying Cray Wanderers on Saturday where there will be free admission. Kick-off is 3pm.

Team: Louis Lawlor, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Will Thomas, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer (Charlie Webster 59 mins), Sid Sollis, Jerson Dos Santos (Ashley Miller 73 mins), Kieron Campbell (Callum Phillip 62 mins).

Scorers: Hythe Town – Sid Sollis 4 mins. Hendon – Keagan Cole 14 mins, Kezie Ibe 43 mins.

Late drama at Reachfields...............

Hythe Town 2 Hastings United 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 2nd December 2017

The game saw two goals in injury time at the thrilling end of the game as Hythe Town and Hastings United drew 2-2 at Reachfields this afternoon.

The early exchanges saw both team feeling each other out as they struggled to create any early opportunities but it was the visitors who were first to threaten as a free kick from the ever dangerous Dajon Golding was sent in from 25 yards forcing Hythe keeper, Will Godmon to  push the ball around the post at full stretch. There were two goals within a minute as Hastings who took the lead on 23 minutes as another free kick from Golding was headed in by Ansu Janneh. However the lead lasted under sixty seconds with Dean Grant feeding the ball to Jerson Dos Santos who slammed the ball home from the middle of the penalty area to immediately bring the scores level.

Whilst the possession remained balanced it was Hastings who were creating the better chances with Sam Cruttwell hitting a shot with the outside of his left foot straight into the arms of Godmon. The ex-Hythe partnership of Kenny Pogue and Sam Adams combined as the former played the ball and Adams tamely curled an effort straight at Godmon. Hastings had the ideal opportunity to regain the lead on 32 minutes as Janneh threaded the ball through to Calum Davies who was one on one with Godmon but the keeper spread himself well to block the shot away for a corner.

The second half started in a similar pattern as Cruttwell played the ball into Adams but he fired just over and then Janneh shot wide under great pressure from Ryan Johnson. At this stage there were a number of attacks from the Cannons which petered out as they got nearer the goal. One of these saw substitute Sid Sollis break down the right and pull back a cross that passed over the mouth of the goal before going wide with nobody in position to convert.

At the other end Pogue pounced on a defensive error but spooned his final shot over. As the half progressed the hosts began to create the better opportunities and looked the more likely as Ben Wilson put in a deep free kick that had to be palmed away by Hastings keeper Charlie Horlock. Hythe then had two golden chances as Kieron Campbell sent Ashley Miller free but he chipped the ball over Horlock but also over the bar and then Jerald Aboagye sent Sid Sollis free. He tried to slide the ball under Hurlock’s body but the keeper blocked.

However Hythe looked to have won the game one minute into injury time as a Campbell free kick was deflected by a defender against the post and out to Dave Cook blasted home from close range. However Hastings did not give up and got an equaliser that overall their performance deserved four minutes in additional time as the Cannons defence failed to clear the ball and George Taggart slammed home. There was one more opportunity for Hythe to take all three points as Miller crossed but both Sollis and Campbell were unable to get enough on the ball to convert.

Hythe had to settle for a point that leaves them in sixth place just inside the play-off places. They take a break on Tuesday from league football as they take on Hendon in the Velocity Cup Third Round. Kick off will be 7:45pm at Reachfields.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Will Thomas (Ryan Palmer 72 mins), Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant (Ashley Miller 81 mins), Jerson Dos Santos (Sid Sollis 52 mins), Keiron Campbell.

Scorers: Hythe Town - Jerson Dos Santos 23 mins, Dave Cook 90 mins. Hastings United – Ansu Janneh 23 mins, George Taggart 90 mins.

Hythe take points on cold night.......

Hythe Town 2 VCD Athletic 1

Bostik League South

Tuesday 28th November 2017

The Cannons were awarded three penalties in their 2-1 win over a lively VCD Athletic at a bitterly cold Reachfields on Tuesday evening.

The game started at “break neck” speed as VCD tested Hythe keeper Will Godmon as early as the first minute as a cross come shot from Kamari Duncan was eventually caught underneath the bar. Hythe had their first opportunity on two minutes as Dean Grant turned on the edge of the area but his shot was deflected wide. Soon after the visitors had a golden opportunity as Tony Martin fed the ball to Jonathon Adebayo who missed the target from close range. The game was going from end to end as Jordan Johnson-Palmer played the ball through to Kieron Campbell who passed into Sid Sollis whose shot went just over the bar. On 12 minutes VCD took the lead with a superb dipping shot from Omar Lawson that passed just under the cross bar and into the net. The visitors had the opportunity to increase their lead four minutes later as Ellis Brown played the ball back to Martin whose shot sailed into the arms of Godmon.

Hythe were level on twenty minutes as Charlie Webster was brought down in the penalty area by Siao Blackwood. Up stepped Sollis whose penalty was slammed straight at VCD keeper Joe Mant who blocked well. Lucky for Sollis the ball rebounded back to him and he made no mistake with second effort as he slammed the ball home. Sollis was soon in the action again as he fed the ball to Webster who rasping shot was well saved by the ex Hythe favourite Mant. One more chance for VCD as Lawson blasted over on the stroke of half-time.

The Cannons started the second half the brighter as Campbell hit a shot from 25 yards that was deflected twice before it ended up in the arms of Mant and then at the other end Lawson blasted a shot that deflected wide. Campbell, who was causing problems for the VCD defence down the left hand side pulled the ball out to Johnson-Palmer whose attempt went over. Hythe were awarded their second penalty as Sollis had a cross handled by Marc Gorbell however Sollis was this time to be denied by Mant at full stretch who pushed the ball against the post and away. Johnson-Palmer fed the ball to Campbell who was again denied by Mant who blocked well and then Jerson Dos Santos played the ball out to Webster who slammed the ball into the side netting. The pressure was now coming from the hosts as they looked for the winner. Ryan Johnson got on the end of a Ryan Palmer cross but his effort looped over the bar.

Hythe were to get the winner on 81 minutes as Campbell broke in again from the left and forced Gorbell to handle the ball. The referee pointed to the spot and showed Gorbell a red card for deliberate hand-ball to reduce the visitors to ten men. This time Dos Santos neatly placed his penalty into the corner just out of the reach of Mant and into the net. Due credit to VCD who did not give up and did push for the equaliser as Alistair Gordon curled the ball just wide and then Lawson had two attempts as firstly he hit a rasping shot into the arms of Godmon and then forced the Hythe keeper to punch away under pressure.

Hythe were to hang on for all three points. It wasn’t the prettiest win but did give the Cannons the win that takes them back up to fifth place as they prepare for Saturday’s home game against Hastings.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ryan Palmer, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Sid Sollis (Jerson Dos Santos 68 mins), Kieron Campbell (Ashley Miller 87 mins).

Scorers: Hythe Town – Sid Sollis 20 mins , Jerson Dos Santos 81 mins (pen). VCD Athletic – Omar Lawson 12 mins.

A strange day in West Sussex.............

Horsham 2 Hythe Town 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 25th November 2017

Despite the host's fine win at Greenwich Borough the previous week, this was a game that Hythe were expected to win. That they did not do so was due to a number of factors that combined on an afternoon that had travelling supporters feeling that it was just not their day.

Manager Clive Cook already had his centre-back colossus Mitchell Dickenson suspended and also had his eyes on possible up-coming bans for a few others on the "totting-up" procedure. He chose to go with Will Thomas at the back for the first time since his long injury lay-off and although up against one or two giants the youngster came through well after an understandably nervy start. With work on Horsham's new ground now underway the venue was Lancing FC where an impossibly green 3G surface combined with a West Indian style blue sky on what was by far the coldest day of the season. In the adjacent streets a festive outside Christmas party drowned all but the loudest shouts from the frozen spectators.

Apart from an early long range attempt from skipper Ryan Johnson, Town settled for some early possession and just about held off the lively home attack, but on 10 minutes the impressive and tall Dean Bown took advantage of some Hythe defensive hesitancy and converted a long forward punt from his defence to put his side in the lead.

Hythe hit back and drew some fractious defending from the home midfield with one particularly nasty tackle from home captain Scott Kirkwood on Johnson-Palmer earning a caution. However danger man Bown continued to threaten as he collected long forward balls and created the space needed to get shots in. For the Cannons Ryan Palmer headed just over from close in whilst at the other end Will Godmon had to be strong to beat out a tremendous shot from Joe Shelly before the rebound was sent just wide of the post.

Jerald Aboagye was making some good forward runs without reward but when he switched tactics and crossed low and hard on the stroke of the half-hour the busy Charlie Webster rammed home the equaliser from close range.

Hythe were now increasing the pressure and home keeper Brannon Daly flapped at a free kick and collided with a colleague only to see the ball fly harmlessly past his post and out of play. Horsham balls forward were now starting to be over-hit and to run away off the fast plastic surface just as Hythe's also were throughout the game. Town started the second period brightly with Webster firing just wide after a neat turn but as with the opening goal the home side went ahead on 56 minutes out of the blue when a corner was not effectively defended and Joe Shelly rose high to head home.

As the seasonal cacophony continued behind the goal Dean Grant forced home another Aboagye cross only to see a linesman's flag signal that the ball was across the line before it came over. Webster had another close range attempt scrambled away before a quiet Dos Santos was replaced by youngster Sid Sollis and a little later Kieron Campbell came on for a tiring Webster. The former tried hard to create enough space for one of his "specials" whilst the latter caused 15 minutes of panic around a desperate home defence although he probably should have equalised when close in on keeper Daly.

Ben Wilson who was heavily involved from start to finish had a couple of late corners, and put in a dangerous free-kick but by now Daly was up for anything and a combination of determination, skill and not a little luck stopped the ball from crossing his line.

For Hythe it was another struggle on plastic against a side more familiar with the surface but as heads dropped at the final whistle the home side had just shaded the game and too many Cannons were just not firing.

Hythe now have two key games that may well define their season when they take on VCD on Tuesday night and Hastings on Saturday (2nd). The overwhelming feeling is that this is a good side that is still seen by many as title challengers as could be seen in the way that Horsham players and supporters celebrated their clearly unexpected victory.

No goals at Reachfields..............

Hythe Town 0 Greenwich Borough 0

Bostik League South

Tuesday 21st November 2017

Hythe Town put up a strong defensive performance as they drew 0-0 with high flying Greenwich Borough on Tuesday evening.

It was the Cannons who started the stronger as after six minutes Jordan Johnson-Palmer created the first opportunity pulling a dangerous ball back from the by-line but the defence cleared under pressure from Dean Grant. Hythe did have the ball in the net a minute later as Ryan Johnson headed the ball home but the referee had already whistled for an infringement in the penalty area. Greenwich had to wait until a quarter of an hour had gone to produce their first effort as new signing Tom Beere crossed in but Charlie MacDonald could only head into the arms of Hythe keeper Will Godmon. A Jack Barham corner caused panic in the Hythe penalty area and eventually Dave Cook cleared off the line.

Then followed a long period as both sides probed but didn’t create any meaningful chances. On 32 minutes Hythe’s Ben Wilson came in from the left feeding Dean Grant who pulled his shot just wide. At the other end Sam Corne curled a shot also just wide. Two minutes before the interval Johnson threaded a through a ball to Jerson Dos Santos who came into the penalty area but both he and Charlie Webster failed to get the ball over the line as the defence blocked. One more opportunity deep into injury time saw a free kick from Beere go just past the post. The half ended level which was a fair reflection of the play.

The early pressure in the second half came from the visitors with the first effort coming on 57 minutes as a Beere free-kick was headed over by Mark Phillips and then Travis Gregory turned in and shot straight into the arms of Godmon. Again Godmon was not tested as he collected the ball from an attempt by Barham. The Cannons created an effort on 73 minutes as a deep Wilson cross from the left found Mitchell Dickenson who headed into the arms of Greenwich keeper George Kamurasi. Both defences had been on top restricting the efforts on goal but there was one last chance for Hythe as Jerald Aboagye released substitute Sollis free but he was blocked by Kamurasi coming off his line.

Both sides had to settle for a point which leaves Hythe in sixth place as they look forward to Saturday’s visit to Horsham.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 82 mins), Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Sid Sollis 73 mins), Ryan Palmer (Kieron Campbell 64 mins).

Carshalton's Koroma gets four to deflate Cannons.....

Hythe Town 0 Carshalton Athletic 4

Bostik League South

Saturday 18th November 2017

Hythe Town were given a lesson in finishing as new signing Omar Koroma got all four in Carshalton Athletic's 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

After an early period of pressure from Hythe including a Ben Wilson corner that curled around the post it was the visitors who took the lead on 16 minutes as Mickel Miller crossed to Koroma who slotted home from close range. Kieron Campbell was then to put pressure on the Robins defence and he is sent a looping ball that was deflected away for a corner by Danny Dudley. It was now Carshalton who were beginning to take control as a cross by Ryan Healey was headed wide by Koroma.

Koroma was in the action again as he laid the ball off to Ricky Korboa but Hythe keeper Will Godmon was on hand to block. The pressure was all coming from the Robins as Miller got hold of the ball on the left hand side and sent it across the face of the goal and away for a goal kick. Michael Aziaya threaded the ball through to Miller who forced Godmon into a save and then the keeper was on hand to rescue Hythe again as a cross from Tommy Bradford was headed on by Koroma. A defining moment in the game came on the stroke of half time as Hythe defender Mitchell Dickenson saw red after being adjudged to have committed a dangerous challenge.

Hythe, despite being down to ten men started the more positive in the second half as a Ben Wilson cross found Jordan Johnson-Palmer who headed towards goal but Carshalton keeper Billy Bishop made the first of a couple of point blank saves. At the other end after 52 minutes Korboa had several attempts to get a shot away before the ball was deflected away for a corner. Another free kick for Kieron Campbell on the edge of the area saw the ball sail over the bar.

Carshalton finally made their man advantage pay as they increased their lead in the 57th minute as a carbon copy of the first goal saw Miller feed Koroma who slammed the ball in. Koroma was looking more and more dangerous as he had an attempt deflected wide by Ryan Johnson who tracked back well. At the other Ryan Palmer fed the ball into Dean Grant who headed down but the effort was saved well by Bishop. Hythe were looking second best as a cross from Bobby Price was spooned over by Korboa and then a breakaway from Korboa played the ball into Miller with Godmon doing well to spread himself to save.

Carshalton made it three as Koroma completed his hat-trick as he curled the ball from the edge of the area around Godmon and into the net on 80 minutes. On 82 minutes Koroma put the icing of the cake as he yet again got on the end of a ball from Miller and fired home for his fourth to give Carshalton a well-deserved victory.

Hythe who dropped to sixth place will have an opportunity to get back on track as they entertain Greenwich Borough on Tuesday evening at Reachfields with a 7:45pm kick off.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer (Ashley Miller 69 mins), Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Mitchell Chapman 45 mins), Kieron Campbell (Sid Sollis 59 mins).

Hythe up to fourth......

Faversham Town 0 Hythe Town 3

Bostik League South

Tuesday 14th November 2017

Hythe battled their way to a comfortable 3-0 win in a tetchy game at Faversham on Tuesday evening.

It was Hythe who dominated proceedings and had their first opportunity after five minutes as Ryan Palmer crossed from the right finding Dean Grant who flicked the ball wide of the target. In the next half an hour there were few chances but it was the Cannons who had most of the possession as they probed the Faversham defence. The next attack saw a dangerous cross by Kieron Campbell which was headed over by Grant. It was then Palmer’s turn to test the defence as he put in a cross that was just out of the reach of Mitchell Dickenson. Faversham had to wait until the 39th minute for their first meaningful chance as Ollie Lee got on the end of a Danny Walder free-kick but headed over the bar. Hythe finally took the lead they deserved in injury time as Palmer put in another ball into the penalty area with Grant rising above the Faversham defence to head home.

Hythe upped the gears in the second half as Palmer crossed and Dickenson had a header deflected wide. Faversham did have a chance on 51 minutes as Luke Griffiths got into position but skewed his shot high and wide. It was however the Cannons who continued to dominate as Jerson Dos Santos pulled the ball back to Ben Wilson whose rasping shot was tipped over by Faversham keeper Simon Overland. Hythe increased their lead on 64 minutes as the impressive Campbell pulled the ball to Ryan Johnson who blasted the ball home.

Another effort followed as Campbell crossed over to Jordan Johnson-Palmer whose fierce volley went just over the bar. Faversham did have a chance to get back in the game on 70 minutes as a Walder corner was headed towards goal by Ryan Cheek but Hythe keeper Will Godmon stretched to tip the ball over the bar. Hythe sealed the points on 75 minutes as Dos Santos fed the ball into Campbell whose low drive found the corner of the net to make it 3-0. There were two more chances for Hythe to extend their lead as firstly Palmer moved in but blasted over and then deep into injury time as Sid Sollis was brought down by Dan Carrington in the penalty area. Up stepped Dos Santos who slammed his penalty against the underside of the bar and away.

Hythe moved up to fourth with this impressive performance and will now look forward to Saturday’s game back at Reachfields as they entertain Carshalton Athletic in their first home fixture for over a month.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson (Will Thomas 87 mins), Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 82 mins), Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer, Dean Grant (Sid Sollis 69 mins), Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell.

Cannons cruise to victory....................

Shoreham 0 Hythe Town 3

Bostik League South

Saturday 11th November 2017

The biggest mystery on Saturday was how Hythe did not score more as they completely dominated the game in a 3-0 win away at bottom placed Shoreham.

The hosts, who were deducted six points at the start of the day, were on the back foot right from the start as Jerald Aboagye moved in from the right but his right footed shot was held by Shoreham keeper James Broadbent. However Hythe were to take the lead after only eight minutes as Ryan Palmer, who had an impressive game on the wing threaded the ball through to Jerson Dos Santos who blasted home from twenty yards. Palmer created another opportunity as his in-swinging corner was pushed palmed away by Broadbent to Ryan Johnson whose attempt was deflected wide.  On half an hour Ben Wilson deflected the ball into the path of Dean Grant who spooned the ball over the bar.

Wilson played another ball through to Grant but he was again unable to find the target as the ball went wide. Wilson was in the action again as he sent a free kick which was met by Shoreham defender O’Neill Odofin whose clearance header went dangerously near the goal but away for a corner. Kieron Campbell, who tested the Shoreham defence a number of times, got the ball into Grant who had two efforts to increase the Hythe lead but Broadbent was on hand to block both.

The second half saw no change in the pattern of play as within 6o seconds of the restart Dos Santos flicked the ball to Campbell who fired into the arms of Broadbent and then Palmer played the ball into Grant who scooped over the bar. The pressure was coming in waves for the Cannons with Shoreham’s occasional attacks easily broken down by the strong Hythe defence. Johnson got the ball into Aboagye who looked for space before shooting but his effort was smothered by Broadbent. The second goal eventually came as Hythe were awarded a free kick on 55 minutes just outside the area. Up stepped Dos Santos whose effort curled exquisitely into the top corner of the net.

The pressure continued with Mitchell Chapman and Jordan Johnson-Palmer distributing the ball well from midfield ensuring the Cannons stayed on top. Campbell slotted a ball through to Dos Santos who pulled his right footed attempt wide and then a Wilson corner was flicked on by Johnson with Mitchell Dickenson heading wide at the far post. A neat one two between Palmer and Dos Santos ended with substitute Sid Sollis curling a shot that slammed into the cross bar. Aboagye then passed into Palmer whose shot was deflected over the bar for a corner.

The hosts had their first real efforts in quick succession on 80 minutes as twice within a minute Hythe keeper Will Godmon was called on to block attempts by George Gaskin. However Hythe were eventually to put the game out of reach as on 82 minutes another in-swinging corner from Palmer was palmed away by Broadbent at the near post. The ball came back to Palmer whose deep cross was slammed home by Sollis coming in at the far post. One more chance for the Cannons as a deep Wilson cross was headed wide by Dickenson but the game was already well out of the reach of Shoreham and Hythe walked away with all three points that took them up to fifth place in the Bostik League South table.

Hythe can now look forward to their trip to Faversham Town on Tuesday evening with great confidence.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Mitchell Chapman (Will Thomas 78 mins), Ryan Palmer, Dean Grant (Sid Sollis 66 mins), Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell (Ashley Miller 82 mins).

Hythe win on penalties.............

Tonbridge Angels 0 Hythe Town 0

Hythe won 5-3 on penalties

Velocity Trophy 2nd Round

Tuesday 7th November 2017

The Cannons saw their way into the next round of the Velocity Trophy winning the penalty shoot-out 5-3 after the game ended 0-0 at Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday evening.

It was Hythe who were first out of the blocks as after two minutes ex-Tonbridge striker Sid Sollis headed down to Jerson Dos Santos whose shot was blocked. Tonbridge had to wait until the 17th minute for their first meaningful attempt as Tashi Jay-Kwayie cut in and forced Hythe keeper Louis Lawlor to tip the ball over the bar. The hosts then had three chances within a three minute period as firstly Nathan Elder headed down a corner with Sonny Miles getting a foot to the ball sending it onto the top of the cross-bar. This was quickly followed by a dangerous curling shot from Joe Turner which was headed away by Dave Cook for a corner. The third effort saw Andre McCollin swing in a corner that found Elder who headed onto Alex Akrofi who nodded over from close-range.

Tonbridge continued to press as Jack Parter cut in from the right and forced Lawlor into a save. Hythe did threaten on 32 minutes as a Ben Wilson corner was rebounded to him but his shot was smothered by Tonbridge keeper Joe Henly. Jordan Johnson Palmer then started a move as he got the ball to Dos Santos who fed Ryan Palmer whose shot was safely gathered by Henly. Hythe were now in the ascendancy as Palmer passed into Dos Santos whose rasping shot was saved well by Henly With a minute of the half to go Tonbridge were awarded a free kick but McCollin blasted it over the bar. Two chances for Hythe in injury time as firstly Johnson-Palmer released Santos who broke free but his right-footed shot went past the post and then Jerald Aboagye played the ball inside to Santos, who threaded a pass into Palmer’s feet before he sent in a blistering shot that was well saved by Henly.

The second half started with a period of sustained Tonbridge pressure but they failed to get a meaningful threat on the Hythe goal and it was in fact the visitors who created the first chance of the half. Aboagye broke down the right putting in a cross that Dos Santos could not get enough head on to direct it on target. On 57 minutes Johnson-Palmer threaded a pinpoint ball through to Dos Santos but he fired wide. With around an hour gone Tonbridge had two opportunities in quick succession as Akrofi stole the ball forcing a great save from Lawlor who was in the form of his life as he was to save again from McCollin.

Kieron Campbell picked up a loose ball and blasted over from 25 yards and then Johnson Palmer eased his way to the edge of the penalty area but his final attempt was deflected away for a corner. Wilson’s resultant corner was headed over by Cook. This move was repeated four minutes later with the same result. The last stage of the game saw sustained pressure from the hosts with Turner breaking through but firing just over the bar and then man of the match Lawlor spread himself well to block an attempt from Akrofi. Lawlor was on hand again to save from Kwayie. Right on the stroke of full time Kwaiye had another effort but this one sailed over the bar and then deep into injury time Dan Thompson shot straight at Lawlor.

It was now down to penalty kicks and with Tonbridge’s Akrofi missing their first attempt it was “advantage Hythe” and the five penalty takers did not disappoint as Ryan Johnson, Cook, Palmer, Wilson and Dos Santos all struck great penalties to take the Cannons through to the next round of the Velocity Trophy where they will play at home to Hendon or Grays Athletic.

It is back to league action on Saturday as Hythe travel down to Shoreham with a 3pm kick-off.

Team: Louis Lawlor, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster (Kieron Campbell 62 mins), Sid Sollis, Jerson Dos Santos, Ryan Palmer.

Grant first half hat-trick paves way to win...............

Chipstead 2 Hythe Town 4

Bostik League South

Saturday 4th November 2017

A twelve minute first half hat-trick from Dean Grant helped ease the Cannons past Chipstead in a 4-2 win at High Road on Saturday afternoon.

It was the hosts who began the stronger creating their first chance after eight minutes as Sam Bell pulled the ball back to Dylan Cascoe who worked his way towards the edge of the area but fired over. Hythe had to wait until the thirteenth minute for their first attempt as a free kick from Kieron Campbell sailed over the bar. Campbell threatened again as he broke free but home keeper Michael Sibley spread himself well to block the effort. Hythe began to look the more dangerous as they continued to attack with the hard working Charlie Webster hitting a shot low and hard but the ball drifted wide.

Hythe’s goal was under threat on 20 minutes as Bell found himself one on one with Hythe keeper Will Godmon who came out to block. The ball was cleared away allowing a counter attack with the ball finding its way to Grant to calmly lob the ball over Sibley and into the net to give the Cannons the lead. As Hythe continued to press Campbell picked up a loose ball and forced a good save from Sibley. The keeper was on hand again soon after as a shot from Grant was deflected into his arms. However Chipstead were level on 25 minutes as Chris O’Flaherty pounced on a defensive error, moving in and stabbing the ball past Godmon.

Hythe were to regain the lead within two minutes as the impressive Jordan Johnson-Palmer stole the ball from the Chipstead defence and threaded it through to Grant who slotted the ball home for his second. Grant could have got his third on 29 minutes as he broke free again but this time Sibley was on hand to prevent a goal. However Grant finally got his hat-trick on 32 minutes as he stole the ball passing onto Campbell who passed back for the Hythe striker to slot the ball home. One more effort from the visitors on the stroke of half time saw a curling free kick from Ben Wilson go just wide.

The second half started with Hythe looking to extend their lead. Jerson Dos Santos got the ball out to Webster who crossed into Campbell who headed over. Campbell was to threaten again as he got on the end of a Jerald Aboagye cross but again the ball went over. Chipstead were trying hard to get back in the game and did create a chance as substitute Jeremy Boakye broke through but was denied well by Godmon coming out to block. They continued to press as Bell headed a deep cross wide. Hythe then had a couple of opportunities to put the game out of Chipstead’s reach as firstly Wilson sent a free-kick from the edge of the area over the bar and then he crossed to substitute Sid Sollis whose header lacked power. However with six minutes to go Sollis was brought down by Sibley in the penalty area and the referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot. Sollis took the penalty and sent Sibley the wrong way to extend Hythe’s lead.

Within two minutes Chipstead got a consolation goal as ex-Folkestone striker Alan Tait slammed the ball home to narrow the gap. Two more chances for Chipstead to narrow the gap saw Boakye loop a shot wide and then an O’Flaherty free kick was deflected into Godmon’s arms.

However The Cannons held on to deservedly take all three points that takes them up to seventh in the table. They take a break this week from league action as they travel to Tonbridge Angels in a Velocity Trophy Second Round on Tuesday evening.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Mitchell Chapman, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Sid Sollis 78 mins), Kieron Campbell (Ryan Palmer 63 mins).

Hythe out of Trophy...............

Leatherhead 1 Hythe Town 0

Buildbase FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round

Saturday 28th October 2017

Hythe were put out of the FA Trophy as they went down to a late penalty in a 1-0 defeat at Leatherhead on Saturday afternoon.

The early exchanges were dominated by the Bostik Premier club as they created the early chances. After only eight minutes, Jack Midson hooked a shot that was blocked well by the ever dependable Mitchell Dickenson. This was followed by a cross from Sean Clohessey who got the ball over to Niall McManus but he screwed his shot over the bar. This was quickly followed by another attack this time from Midson who broke through but his final effort was slammed into the side netting.  It was eighteen minutes before the Cannons created their first chance as a cross from the busy Hythe midfielder Charlie Webster came in but there was nobody able to convert the opportunity as the ball went across the goal mouth.

Hythe were beginning to get into the game as Kieron Campbell cut in and unleashed a shot that was deflected for a corner. Clear cut chances were at a premium with only two more efforts in the half for the hosts as firstly a ball was sent over to Tom Richards who fired over and then McManus passed into Sam Blackman who headed wide. The half passed with hardly an effort on target.

The second period started with Leatherhead looking the more likely but struggling to hit the target as firstly Leatherhead player-manager Sammy Moore played the ball into Midson who headed wide and then the same combination saw the same result fourteen minutes later. Hythe had their first clear cut chance of the half after 61 minutes as Jerald Aboagye pulled the ball back from the by-line towards Campbell. The Hythe winger challenged Leatherhead keeper Zaki Oualah but got a yellow card for his efforts. Hythe keeper Will Godmon prevented any further danger as he pushed away a cross from Clohessy. Then Hythe created their best opportunity of the game as Grant put the ball out to Webster who moved in and sent in a shot that was pushed wide by Oualah. It was now the visitors who were beginning to create the better chances as Ben Wilson firstly had a long shot that was held by Oualah and then had a free kick from the edge of the area that went just over the top.

Hythe continued to press as Webster crossed over to Dean Grant but his attempt looped over. At the other end a Wilson clearance went to Midson who moved in and blasted wide. However the stalemate was broken seven minutes from time as there was an infringement in the Hythe penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Midson who sent Godmon the wrong way to bury the ball in the back of the net for the winning goal. Hythe did have a couple of chances to draw the scores level as firstly Wilson sent in a free kick from the edge of the area just wide and then, deep into injury time, substitute Ryan Palmer passed over to Webster who off-balance shot into the arms of Oualah.

Time ran out for the Cannons as they couldn’t get back into the game and were knocked out of the FA Trophy. Hythe will now look forward to their next game away at Chipstead as Tuesday night’s Velocity Trophy tie against Tonbridge Angels is now postponed as our opponents drew in the FA Trophy. More details of rearrangements will be published on the website as soon as it is known,

Hythe get a point in the wind............

Walton Casuals 2 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 21st October 2017

Hythe Town came from behind to gain a deserved point in a 2-2 draw on a very windy afternoon at Walton Casuals on Saturday afternoon.

With the strong win behind, it was Hythe who started like an “express train” as they took the lead after only fifteen seconds as Kieron Campbell surged into the penalty area and planted the ball past Walton Casuals keeper, Denzel Gerrar. Hythe continued to press as Dean Grant broke in through the Walton defence but the ball was blocked by Gerrar. After five minutes the Cannons were unlucky not to increase their lead as Jordan Johnson-Palmer, who had a strong game in midfield, slotted the ball through to Charlie Webster whose first effort was blocked. The rebound came back to Webster who smashed the ball against the bar.

It took a quarter of an hour for the hosts to create their first chance as Mohamed Abukar sent in a free-kick from 25 yards but it was easily collected by Hythe keeper, Will Godmon. This was followed by a long range attempt from Jack Battie that sailed high over the bar. On twenty minutes Hythe threatened again as this time it was Jerson Dos Santos who beat two tackles to finally curl the ball which was well saved by Gerrar at full stretch to his left. It was Casuals who were now looking the more likely with Godmon tested twice. Firstly he was quick off his line to steal the ball from Harry Mills’ feet and then he easily saved a shot from Josh Kelly. Kelly was to have another shot on 27 minutes which drifted wide of the target. Dos Santos did have an opportunity on 39 minutes when he got underneath a free kick from just outside the area that sailed over the bar.

Five minutes before the interval, Casuals should have been level as a neat interchange on the edge of the area resulted in the ball coming to Shaun McCormack who should have done better when he fired wide when it looked easier to hit the target. However they were not to be denied and were level on the stroke of half time as Kelly had a shot parried by Godmon with the ball coming back to Kelly who made no mistake planting the ball in the back of the net. Straight from the restart there was an effort from Campbell who fired a free kick just wide of the target.

It was Walton Casuals who started the second half with the wind at their back and were ahead after 48 minutes when Abukar pounced on a defensive mistake and buried the ball in the back of the net from just outside the penalty area. Another error at the back saw Kelly have a shot that was deflected wide. However Hythe were still creating chances and had two within a minute as firstly Dos Santos crossed to Grant who couldn’t get enough head on the ball to cause problems for Gerrar and then Grant pulled the ball back to Campbell who slammed the ball wide. McCormack then had an effort for the hosts as he broke into the penalty area and forced a good save from Godmon.

However Hythe eventually got the equaliser that they deserved on 70 minutes as Dos Santos broke down the by-line pulling the ball back to Grant who fired the ball towards goal and Dos Santos following through got the final touch home. The game was now open for either team to take all three points as Grant hit a shot that lacked power and was easily collected by Gerrar and then he burst in from the right and slammed the ball against the post. At the other end Abukar twisted and turned before firing over from 25 yards. Neither side could break the deadlock with both teams taking a point which was a fair reflection of the game.

Hythe now have a break from league action as they visit Leatherhead next Saturday in the Buildbase FA Trophy.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ryan Palmer, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 90 mins), Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Sid Sollis 78 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Scorers: Walton Casuals – Josh Kelly 45 mins, Mohamed Abukar 48 mins. Hythe Town – Kieron Campbell 1 min, Jerson Dos Santos 70 mins.

Early goal is enough for Cannons.....

Hythe Town 1 Whyteleafe 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 14th October 2017

Hythe Town got all three points thanks to an early goalkeeping error in a game of two halves as they won 1-0 against high-flying Whyteleafe at Reachfields on Saturday afternoon

Hythe started off at express pace and created their first effort in as little as 18 seconds as Jerson Dos Santos forced Whyteleafe keeper Joe Tupper to push the ball around the post for a corner. Hythe continued to dominate the early exchanges as first Ben Wilson had a shot blocked by Tupper. Dean Grant following up had his attempt again blocked coming back to Charlie Webster who was also denied by Tupper. However it was an error by Tupper on twelve minutes that gave Hythe the only goal of the game as he fumbled a shot by Jerald Aboagye from the right and the ball crept over the line.

The Cannons continued to look the more likely as Webster played the ball onto Dos Santos who fed the ball to Ryan Palmer but the ball went over the bar from close range. Whyteleafe had to wait until the eighteenth minute for their first threat with Daniel Ajakaiye pulling the ball back from the by-line to Nkori-Venceslas Bola who screwed his shot wide when it looked easier to hit the target. However Hythe continued to press as Dos Santos had two shots held by Tupper to his left. On 32 minutes Aboagye, who had an excellent game, unleashed a shot that was pushed onto the post and away by Tupper. Dos Santos was to have another shot that went wide before the Leafe created a chance as a corner from Sam Clayton found Olumide Oluwatimilehin who, off balance, shot wide.

The pattern of the game completely changed in the second period. Three minutes in substitute Ambrose Gnahore fed the ball through to Ajakaiye who was dispossessed by Godmon who came off his line quickly. A free kick from 30 yards by Clayton sailed over the bar and then a cross from Oluwatimilehin put the Hythe defence under pressure and they just managed to slice the ball wide. Leafe continued to press looking for the equaliser with Wazir Azeez-Oluwondran driving in a forceful shot that was tipped over by Godmon.

Hythe did not have a clear cut chance in the half until ten minutes from time with Grant breaking down the right and sending in a cross to Dos Santos whose attempt was deflected for a corner. One more chance for the visitors with Ajakaiye getting ahead of the defence but skewed wide under pressure from the ever dependable Mitchell Dickenson. Substitute, Sid Sollis did have an opportunity to put the game out of Whyeleafe’s grasp as he broke through but his final effort was blasted wide.

Hythe hung on for all three points that takes them up to seventh place giving them confidence as they move in to the next fixture away at Walton Casuals next Saturday.

Single goal is enough to progress in Trophy.......

Kempston Rovers 0 Hythe Town 1

Buildbase FA Trophy Preliminary Round

Saturday 7th October 2017

Hythe Town finally came out the better as they won 1-0 at Evostick South-East Division Kempston Rovers following a tightly fought FA Trophy Preliminary Round tie on Saturday afternoon.

The early part of the game was very much stalemate as both sides tested each other and the first opportunity did not come until after a quarter of an hour as Kempston’s Sam Johnson put in a corner that was headed over by Robbie Goodman. Hythe had to wait until twenty minutes for their first threat as Ryan Palmer chased up the left wing pulling in a cross to Ashley Miller who could not get enough of the ball to divert it towards goal. Chances were coming at both ends with Kempston creating the next effort as Sam Johnson picked up the ball and got into position but his shot was poor and went out for a throw-in.

Hythe were next to threaten as a dangerous free-kick was nodded on by Dean Grant but lacked power and flew into the arms of home keeper Martin Conway. Hythe keeper Will Godmon had to be at his best as he tipped over a shot from the left by Jake Newman. On 34 minutes Jerald Aboagye broke down the right and crossed into Grant who headed over. Godmon was again on hand to keep the scores level as Ash Fuller got himself into a shooting position but his attempt was palmed away for a corner by the Hythe keeper.  Hythe had their best effort on 40 minutes as Kieron Campbell slammed a free-kick from 25 yards against the cross bar. The hosts really should have done better a minute into first half injury time as Newman broke through the Hythe defence but he sliced his shot wide when it looked easier to hit the target.

The early stages of the second half saw Hythe begin to take control of the game as firstly Palmer fired over the bar and then Miller turned in but his effort sailed over. Palmer then had a shot that drifted wide. However Hythe were not to be denied and took the lead on 63 minutes as Palmer crossed into Grant who headed in from close range via a small deflection from a defender. This seemed to spark the hosts in to action as they pressed for an equaliser. Kyal McNulty put in a dangerous cross that was cleared away by the head of Dave Cook.

Hythe did have one more chance to increase their lead as Sid Sollis cut in along the by-line pulling the ball back to Grant but his attempt was blocked. However it was the Hythe defence who were coming under pressure but held out with Mitchell Dickenson particularly impressive at the back. Ben Shepherd had an effort that was deflected into the side netting by the Hythe defence and then Sam Johnson broke through but his effort lacked power and was smothered easily by Godmon. One more opportunity for Kempston saw a melee in the Hythe penalty area that was cleared away before the hosts could convert.

So it was The Cannons who held onto their 1-0 win and they progress to play at Leatherhead in the 1st Qualifying Round to be played on Saturday 28th October 2017. Hythe will now return to league action next Saturday as they entertain Whyteleafe at Reachfields with a 3pm kick-off.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ryan Palmer, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 73 mins), Dave Cook, Charlie Webster (Ben Wilson 87 mins), Dean Grant, Ashley Miller (Sid Sollis 63 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Dos Santos brace seals points..............

Hythe Town 2 Thamesmead Town 1

Bostik League South

Tuesday 3rd October 2017

Mark Jenner reports from Reachfields

With our usual match correspondent somewhere in the North of England the Board looked to their own bench for a substitute scribe for tonight’s game against Thamesmead with me being the reluctant volunteer to attempt to maintain the usual standard.  So if you are reading this and you think you were at a different match please let me know or alternatively I commend Bob’s BKVP Sport video for the match day connoisseur.

Right from the off, a mysterious five minutes late, Hythe attacked the Thamesmead goal with a super cross into the box by Ryan Palmer. With Kenny Pogue gone it surely gives plenty of chances to the other strikers to score.  Ten minutes in and Thamesmead have their first attack ending in a skier from Alex Teniola from a promising position, then just to show Hythe can do the same Jerson Dos Santos reciprocated with an identical shot at the other end with the ball boys still looking for the ball in the car park twenty minutes later.

Minutes later a combination of errors left Ryan Johnson clear down the middle with only the keeper to beat with a shot from 25 yards, more work for the ball boys in the car park.  A mistake by Thamesmead gifts the ball to Hythe and Jerson with a clear shot shoots just wide.  Looking at the watch it is half way through the first session and the best news to report being our noisy neighbours being one nil down at Merstham.

A lengthy stoppage as a Thamesmead defender receives treatment from a nice lady who works magic on the pitch as he is soon up and running about like Bambi, well a little like Bambi after he got shot it must be said.

On 39 minutes a stray shot rattles off the Hythe post and a follow up is well wide.  A movement starts down the right wing with a cheeky back heel by Jerson to find Ryan Palmer who sets off at pace leaving defenders for dead before passing back to Jerson who calmly beats the keeper for one nil on 40 minutes. Thamesmead make substitution as Laurent Mendy is brought on for Tashi Jay Kwayie with two minutes to go.

Second half starts same as the first, two opposition defenders miss the ball which falls to Dean Grant who fires into the side netting from an acute angle. Crackerjack shot from Charlie Webster parried by the keeper, no follow up this time, his Dad applauds from the sidelines. Minutes later Webbo on the right wing sets up a cross for Jerson smash in a great goal past the keeper who had no chance.  Worth the entrance money just to see that, must be something in the Santos name, remember Pele they’re the same. (59 minutes)

Thamesmead replace Teniola who had failed to impress with Scott Kinch.  Hythe attack again where Dean Grant puts in a great cross in front of goal but Webbo didn’t have the pace at this late stage to get on it and put it through a near empty goal.

Twelve minutes to go and Hythe are sitting back and letting their opponents come on to them, our recent history of conceding late goals shows this to be an ill advised policy, please don’t let them back into the game at this late stage.  Free kick towards the corner flag whipped in results in a header just over from Thamesmead.

Hythe take Palmer off for Kieron Campbell on 80 minutes.  As predicted a simple ball floated over to the near post leaves Paul Vines with a simple nod in from two feet to score and spoil the clean sheet.  Time to hang on at 88 minutes.

Final score 2-1 to Hythe for a valuable three points.  Entertainment value versus staying in and watching telly-no contest.

Some of the names may have been changed to protect the innocent.

Team: Will Godman, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos, Ryan Palmer (Kieron Campbell 80 mins),

Hythe concede late to come away with nothing.......

Sittingbourne 1 Hythe Town 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 30th September 2017

Another goal conceded in the last ten minutes was enough to give high flying Sittingbourne a 1-0 win against Hythe Town at Woodstock Park on Saturday afternoon.

The game started cagily as both teams sparred with neither side able to create any meaningful chances and it wasn’t until the 13th minute that Hythe created their first effort. A Kieron Campbell free kick tested Bourne keeper Daren Hawkes whose save rebounded to Jerson Dos Santos whose attempt was blocked. Sittingbourne had to wait until the 22nd minute to threaten as a cross from Kane Phillip found Kane Rowland whose shot was well stopped by Hythe keeper Will Godmon. These were the only two clear attempts in the first half an hour but it was Hythe who looked the more dangerous for the final third of the half. Firstly a free-kick from 25 yards by Dos Santos went straight at Hawkes and then a cross from the right by Charlie Webster found Dos Santos whose effort dropped on the top of the cross bar and over.

After 36 minutes Webster moved in on Hawkes who was first to the ball and the ball rebounded to Jordan Johnson-Palmer who slammed the ball wide. Sittingbourne did have one opportunity before the break as Rowland played the ball over to Bola Dawodu who slammed over from close range when it looked easier to hit the target. On the stroke of half-time Dos Santos was in the action again as he shot wide of the target.

The second half started with the Cannons on the attack as the ever dangerous Jerald Aboagye broke down the right flank before putting the ball into Webster who fired over the bar. However as the half progressed it was Sittingbourne who began to look the more likely and whilst there were limited chances created they were mostly coming from the hosts. On 50 minutes Phillip sent a speculative shot that went straight at Godmon and then in another attack the ball came out to ex-Hythe striker Tom Loynes who fired over from 25 yards. Loynes was involved again on the hour as he put in a through ball to Rowland but Godmon spread himself well to prevent a goal.

A neat move from Sittingbourne saw Phillip spread the ball from left to right to find substitute Gil Carvalho. He passed into Chris Webber who pulled his shot wide. However on 80 minutes it was Sittingbourne who got the winner as Dawodu broke through rounding Godmon and placed the ball into the net. With Hythe appeals for offside, the referee consulted his assistant but the goal was given.  Hythe did press for an equaliser but could not break through the solid Sittingbourne defence who hang on for three more points in their impressive start to the season.

Hythe must now regroup as they look forward to home fixture on Tuesday evening as they entertain Thamesmead Town.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster (Ashley Miller 61 mins), Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Sid Sollis 81mins), Kieron Campbell (Ryan Palmer 69 mins).

Goal Scorer: Sittingbourne-Bola Dawodu 80 mins.

Grant hat trick seals win..............

Hythe Town 3 Faversham Town 0

Bostik League South

Tuesday 26th September 2017

Hythe Town sailed to an impressive 3-0 win thanks to a superb Dean Grant hat trick against Faversham Town on Tuesday evening at Reachfields.

The Cannons started on the attack after just two minutes as Charlie Webster moved in and shot wide. Faversham had their first opportunity on four minutes with former Hythe striker Liam King putting in a dangerous cross to the far post where Hythe keeper Will Godmon prevented Liam King getting in a serious effort. There were a number of chances coming at both ends as firstly Hythe’s Jerson Dos Santos fed the ball to Webster who worked his way in but his final attempt went straight into the arms of Faversham keeper Simon Overland. This was followed by a Faversham free kick from just outside the area from Danny Walder that dipped just over the bar and then a cross by George Monger was headed well wide by Izzy Adebayo.

As the first half progressed Hythe’s control of the game increased. A Ben Wilson cross was headed over by Ryan Johnson, Kieron Campbell fired wide and Jordan Johnson-Palmer shot over. Grant was beginning to look dangerous as he worked his way into the penalty area only to have his effort deflected wide and then Dos Santos slammed a shot against the upright. The hosts had a golden opportunity on 37 minutes to take the lead as Mark Lovell brought down Dos Santos in the penalty area. Up stepped Johnson whose penalty sailed high and wide. Faversham did have one effort as a Mongor strike went straight into Godmon’s arms. Ben Wilson continued to put in some testing crosses as Overland pushed the ball out to Webster whose effort went wide and then Campbell sent in a cross that was headed down by Webster but was pushed wide by Overland. However Hythe were not to be denied and took the lead a minute before the break as Webster sent a ball into Grant whose stooping header flew into net.

Hythe went further ahead on 51 minutes as Grant forced his way free and slammed the ball home. The Hythe defence which had been strong all evening limited Faversham to long range efforts as firstly Walder curled a free kick from 25 yards wide and then King cut back in and shot over the bar. Walder then sent another shot over from 30 yards. He then had two free kicks, one of which went over and the second straight at Godmon. However on 83 minutes Grant completed his hat trick against his former club as he again broke free and slotted the ball home to seal the points for Hythe. A couple of chances followed for the hosts as substitute Sid Sollis fed the ball through to Dos Santos whose effort was saved by Overland and then deep into injury time Ashley Miller pulled the ball back to Sollis who fired just over.

Hythe deserved their three goal win which takes them up to eighth place and this should give them confidence as they move on to their game at high flying Sittingbourne on Saturday.

Team: Will Godman, Jerald Aboagye (Ryan Palmer 90 mins), Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant (Sid Sollis 83 mins), Jerson Dos Santos, Kieron Campbell (Ashley Miller 74 mins).

Hythe lose two goal lead but still get a point......

South Park 2 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 23th September 2017

Hythe Town lost a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at high flying South Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was South Park who began the game on top with their first opportunity coming on three minutes as Kieran Lavery cut in from the left and found space to hit a right footed shot wide of the target and then within a another two minutes the exact same move saw Jack Mazzone have his shot held by Hythe Town keeper, Will Godmon. The hosts continued to press as a neat one-two between Chris Smith and Lavery saw the latter’s attempt blocked well by Godmon coming off his line. Hythe had to wait 14 minutes for their first effort as Kieron Campbell hit a 25 yard shot that sailed over the bar.

The Cannons were settling into the game and created a further chance as Dean Grant pounced on a defensive error but his shot went just wide. The next quarter of an hour saw few chances until 35 minutes as Hythe took the lead. Jerald Aboagye forced his way to the by-line pulling the ball back to Grant who tapped home from close range. Charlie Webster was next to threaten as he put in a dangerous cross which went in to the arms of South Park keeper, Callum Thomas.  The hosts did have one opportunity just before half time as Smith put in a cross which was pushed away by Godmon before South Park could capitalise.

The period after half time saw Hythe in control of the game and they were two up within two minutes of the restart.  Jordan Johnson-Palmer threaded a superb through ball to Jerson Dos Santos who placed the ball past Thomas and into the corner of the net. Despite appearing to control that part of the game, Hythe were still having to deal with some breakaways as firstly Lavery sent in a dipping free kick which was tipped over by Godmon and after the resultant corner Mazzone hooked an effort into the arms of the Hythe goalkeeper. As the half progressed, South Park began to look the more likely as Joe Jackson broke through but fired over the bar and then they pulled a goal back on 70 minutes as Adam Pullin crossed from the right and Jackson headed in at the near post. There were a couple of opportunities for Hythe to regain a two goal lead as a Wilson cross found Ryan Johnson who had two attempts with the first one being blocked and the second going over the bar. Then Ryan Palmer broke in from the left but pushed the ball wide of the far post.

However with three minutes left on the clock, South Park got the equaliser as Chris Smith lobbed the ball over Godmon to hit the far post and go into the net off the rebound. It was a disappointing end to the game which could have been worse had Jackson made more of his opportunity as he caught Dave Cook in possession finding himself one on one with Godmon but missed the target with his attempt.

Whilst it was disappointing to lose a two goal lead it was probably a point Hythe would have been happy when the game started. They must now press on as they entertain Faversham Town in league fixture on Tuesday evening at Reachfields.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Sid Sollis 90 mins), Dave Cook, Charlie Webster, Dean Grant, Jerson Dos Santos (Ryan Palmer 78 mins), Kieron Campbell (Mitchell Chapman 66 mins).

Scorers: South Park-Joe Jackson 70 mins, Chris Smith 87 mins. Hythe Town-Dean Grant 35 mins, Jerson Dos Santos 48 mins

Hythe through in Velocity Trophy......

Faversham Town 2 Hythe Town 5

Velocity Trophy 1st Round

Tuesday 19th September 2017

The Cannons eventually eased through to the next round of the Velocity Trophy as they won 5-2 against a young Faversham Town side at Salters Lane on Tuesday evening.

Hythe dominated proceedings throughout the ninety minutes and were first to threaten on four minutes as Kieron Campbell had a 25 yard effort deflected wide for a corner. Another long range effort from Ashley Miller drifted well wide of the target. Faversham had their first attempt on ten minutes by Luke Griffiths but his shot sailed over the bar. Charlie Webster, who impressed on the right wing, cut in from the right and struck the ball with his left foot but again it went wide of the goal.

Hythe were dominating but struggling to test Faversham keeper Mitchell Day with another shot going wide as Campbell burst in from the right. The Cannons had the perfect opportunity, on 21 minutes to make their dominance count as Sid Sollis was brought down in the Faversham penalty area by Will Hadler. Up stepped Ryan Johnson whose penalty was brilliantly saved by Day. Day was on hand again eight minutes later as Campbell weaved his way into a goal scoring position and forced the Faversham keeper to push the ball around the post.

One more chance for Hythe before half time saw Jordan Johnson-Palmer hit a long range shot from 30 yards that drifted wide. However there was a sucker punch on the stroke of half time as Faversham took the lead against the run of play. A cross from Sam Lawford found Luke Griffiths who stroked the ball home.

The pattern of the game didn’t change in the second half as Hythe continued to dominate the game. On 50 minutes the ever dangerous Campbell pulled the ball back hitting the outside of the upright. However two minutes later Hythe finally took one of their chances and were level as Ryan Palmer fed the ball to Johnson whose header was deflected by a defender into the net. Webster was then to cut in and shoot just wide but did better on 68 minutes as he met a Campbell cross and planted the ball into the net to give the Cannons the lead. However that lead only lasted nine minutes when again against the run of play Emmanuel Barnett turned and slotted the ball home to bring the scores level.

The Cannons then seemed to go up through the gears as the pressed hard in the last ten minutes with Palmer feeding the ball through to Dean Grant who headed over and then with eight minutes left on the clock substitute Jerson Dos Santos broke into the area and placed his shot passed Day to give the Cannons the lead. On 86 minutes Hythe finally made the win secure as Jerald Aboagye went on a run through the defence finding himself one on one with Day and slammed the ball home to make in 4-2.  Right on the stroke of full time the visitors put the icing on the cake as Campbell had a shot blocked but it fell to Mitchell Chapman who blasted home from close range.

Hythe now await the draw for the next round to find out their opponents as they move onto a difficult away fixture on Saturday at South Park.

Team: Nick Shaw, Jerald Aboagye (Ben Wilson 87 mins), Ryan Palmer, Ryan Johnson, Michell Dickenson, Mitchell Chapman, Charlie Webster, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Sid Sollis (Dean Grant 69 mins), Ashley Miller (Jerson Dos Santos 69 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Early penalty enough for Cannons victory......

Hythe Town 1 Ashford United 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 16th September 2017

Hythe were grateful for a fourth minute penalty to gain all three points in a 1-0 win at home to Ashford United on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Cannons who dominated the first half and created their first opportunity on two minutes as Ryan Palmer sent in a free kick from just outside the penalty area straight into the arms of Ashford keeper, George Kamurasi. However Kamusari was at fault two minutes later as he clipped Hythe debutant Jerson Dos Santos as he broke into the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Ryan Johnson who placed his kick neatly into the corner of the net to give Hythe the lead.

The hosts continued to control the game with Dean Grant working his way down the left and unleashing a shot just over the bar. Ashford had to wait until the twelfth minute for their first meaningful effort as Max Watters broke through lobbing the ball over Hythe keeper Will Godmon but also over the bar. Palmer was in the action again as he cut in and shot straight at Kamurasi. At the other end Tyrell Richardson-Brown turned and shot but did not trouble Godmon who held onto the ball easily.  Mitchell Chapman was to then run in towards the Ashford penalty area and slam the ball over the bar. One more chance for Hythe before the interval as Ben Wilson played the ball into Grant who nodded on to Dave Cook who, playing his record 356th appearance for the Cannons, got under the ball and headed over from close range.

The second half started again with Hythe in the ascendancy as Wilson sent in a deep corner to Mitchell Dickenson who headed wide and then on 52 minutes the same combination saw Wilson cross to Dickenson who buried his header into the net but the goal was ruled out for an infringement that the referee had seen. Ashford had their first attack of the half on 53 minutes as Matthew Day broke through the offside trap but screwed his effort wide. The hosts however were still creating the majority of the chances as Wilson got the ball onto Grant who fed Dos Santos whose attempt went just wide. With Hythe continuing to press Jordan Johnson-Palmer created the next opportunity passing to Palmer whose final shot lacked power and did not threaten. Ashford were creating the odd scare at the other end as Brendon Williams got the ball over to Connor Westney whose effort was well saved by Godmon.

Hythe were continuing to have the lion’s share of the play as Dos Santos passed the ball out to Wilson whose shot was saved by Kumurasi who was on hand again two minutes later as Jerald Aboagye pulled the ball back to Grant who forced a good save from the Ashford keeper. Dos Santos was proving a thorn in Ashford’s side as he closed in down the by-line getting the ball into Aboagye who fired wide. On 73 minutes Kumurasi tipped over a curling free kick from Dos Santos.

Despite dominating proceedings the home support were becoming concerned that there may be a sucker punch from the visitors as Ben Davisson screwed a shot wide and then ex Hythe favourite Pat Kingwell pulled the ball back and unleashed a shot that shaved the right hand post. This was followed by a Richardson-Brown attempt that curled the ball high over the bar.

Hythe were to hold onto their lead and take all three points. They take a break from league action on Tuesday as they visit Faversham Town in the Velocity Trophy.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Mitchell Chapman, Dave Cook, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dean Grant (Sid Sollis 75 mins), Jerson Dos Santos (Kieron Campbell 89 mins), Ryan Palmer (Ashley Miller 68 mins).

Sollis double helps Hythe to three points.........

VCD Athletic 1 Hythe Town 2

Bostik League South

Tuesday 12th September 2017

Hythe got their first away points of the season as they won 2-1 at VCD Athletic on Tuesday evening.

The first half was stalemate as both sides struggled to get any chances on target. The first opportunity for the hosts came after only three minutes as the ever dangerous, Steve Carvell turned in and shot straight at Hythe keeper, Will Godmon. The Cannons created their first effort on seven minutes as Charlie Webster played the ball into Dean Grant who headed into VCD keeper Joe Mant’s arms. The odd chance was being created at each end as a cross from Omar Lawson found Aymun El-Moyhalbel who could not get proper contact on the ball and it trickled wide.

Webster sent in another cross for Hythe and Grant again headed straight at Mant. At the other end Carvell while off-balance shot wide. Kieron Campbell then delivered a high cross into Grant who this time got under the ball and headed over. One last chance of the half came on 34 minutes as a Ben Wilson free-kick was rifled straight at the ex-Hythe keeper Mant who held onto the ball easily. It was no surprise that the teams went in goal less at half-time.

The game livened up in the second half as Carvell shot wide of the Hythe goal. However the Cannons were ahead on 53 minutes as Sid Sollis came in from the right and fired toward the far post with the ball deflecting off Mant and into the net. Hythe went further ahead three minutes later as Grant fed the ball through to Sollis who ran in and slotted the ball home for his second of the evening.

This seemed to spark VCD into action as they tried to get back into the game. On the hour a cross from El-Moyhalbel was headed down and wide by Kemo Darboe and then Carvell found himself one on one with Godmon who spread himself well to block Carvell’s path and the VCD striker fired over. However Carvell was not to be denied as on 66 minutes he turned on the edge of the area and slotted the ball home to narrow the gap. Despite a Wilson free kick going over the bar, it was the hosts who looked the more likely to get an equaliser as the ball came out to Derek Duncan who fired over and then Ricardo Joseph sent a dipping effort over the bar. Thanks partly due to a dominating performance by Mitchell Dickenson at the back the Cannons soaked up the pressure.

Hythe were unlucky on 87 minutes not to extend their lead as a Grant cross was deflected on to his own cross bar by Mant. VCD immediately counter attacked and substitute Rashid Kamara forced a good save from Godmon. One more opportunity for Hythe saw Ashley Miller push the ball out to Wilson whose shot was well saved by Mant.

The game marked Dave Cook completing his 355th appearance for Hythe overtaking John Walker’s previous record and he was rewarded with three well-earned points as the Cannons look forward to their game on Saturday at home to Ashford United.

Team: Will Godmon, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Mitchell Chapman, Dave Cook, Sid Sollis (Jordan Johnson-Palmer 73 mins), Dean Grant (Kenny Pogue 90 mins), Ryan Palmer (Ashley Miller 86 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Hythe lose at Lewes.....

Lewes 1 Hythe Town 0

Bostik League South

Saturday 9th September 2017

Hythe's recent resurgence came to a halt as they went down 1-0 at Lewes on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Cannons who created the first opportunity as after three minutes Dean Grant played the ball into Ashley Miller who had two stabs at the ball but both occasions the attempt was blocked. However it was Lewes who began to take control as their first effort came on six minutes with James Hammond putting in a dangerous cross that went across the Hythe goalmouth and away for a goal-kick. Ronnie Conlon was to then force Hythe keeper, Will Godmon to tip the ball over as he unleashed a shot from the edge of the area.

There were screams for a Lewes penalty as Reece Williams-Bowers went down in the penalty area but the referee waved away the appeals. The pressure continued as a Dave Cook clearance fell to veteran striker Jamie Brotherton who spooned the ball into Godmon’s arms. Hythe were creating some opportunities as Grant crossed but Kenny Pogue could not get enough of the ball to redirect it towards goal. On 24 minutes Lewes converted their dominance into a goal as Conlon on the left fired the ball into the far corner of the net to give them a deserved lead.

There were a couple of efforts at either end in the 36th minute as Willliams-Bowers turned and shot into Godmon’s arms and then a Ben Wilson had cross headed wide. A poor clearance from Jerald Aboagye went straight to Hammond who shot over and then with a minute on the clock until half time a Wilson corner was headed over by Mitchell Dickenson.

The second half was played in periods of torrential rain and started with Hythe on the attack as Miller fed the ball over to Kieron Campbell but the ball was fired over the bar. Ryan Palmer started to press down the right and crossed into captain, Ryan Johnson who headed over. Lewes still looked likely to get a second as the ball came out to Hammond who looped the ball over the bar. Hammond then slammed a free kick into the side netting. This was followed by a melee in the Hythe penalty area which was eventually cleared away.

The Cannons were unlucky on 76 minutes as a Sid Sollis cross was met by Johnson whose header slammed against the post and then a Palmer cross was headed away by ex-Folkestone Invicta defender Frankie Chapple before any Hythe player could get to the ball. Hythe did continue to press in the last few minutes to get the elusive goal that would give them a point as Grant firstly slammed in a shot from close range that was blocked and then right on full time Palmer lofted a free kick just over the bar.

It was too little, too late for Hythe who must look for their first away points of the season as they travel to VCD Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Mitchell Dickenson, Ryan Johnson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ashley Miller (Ryan Palmer 60 mins), Dean Grant, Kenny Pogue (Mitchell Chapman 45 mins), Kieron Campbell (Sid Sollis 72 mins)

Hythe out of Senior Cup on penalties......

Hythe Town 1 Folkestone Invicta 1 (Folkestone won 5-4 on pens)

Kent Reliance Senior Cup 1st Round

Tuesday 5th September 2017

The Cannons were quickly onto the offensive and were ahead after only two minutes as Sid Sollis picked up the ball. He eased his way forward and unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew into the top corner of the net giving Folkestone Invicta keeper Scott Chalmers-Stevens no chance.

Invicta had to wait until the 13th minute to create their first opportunity as the lively Jordan Wright fired in a cross from the right which was pushed away by Hythe keeper Will Godmon. The ball came back to Adam Yusuff who fired the ball straight back at Godmon. The game was going from end to end and it was Hythe who were next to threaten as Ryan Palmer rifled the ball from 25 yards just over the bar.

At the other end Folkestone’s Scott Heard put the ball through to Wright but he was well blocked by Keane Gillett who cleared the ball away. A couple of efforts for the equaliser firstly saw Nat Blanks find Finn O’Mara who headed wide and then on 41 minutes the ball came out to Wright who spooned the ball high over the bar. Another run from Palmer saw a bullet shot which flew into Chalmers-Stevens’ arms.

The second half began with Hythe on the attack as Sollis worked his way along the by-line and pulled the ball back for Palmer whose shot was deflected wide. Hythe continued to press and a Charlie Webster long range free kick into the area was flicked on by Pogue to Sollis who couldn’t quite get his toe to the ball. On 64 minutes Palmer played the ball across to Grant who attempted a spectacular overhead kick that went just wide. This was followed by a Palmer corner that was met by Grant’s head forcing Chalmers-Stevens to tip the ball over the bar.

As the game progressed it was Invicta who began to pump up the pressure looking for the equaliser. Kwanbena Osei had a header cleared off the line with appeals for a penalty turned down by the referee and then six minutes later a corner by Heard was headed on forcing Ryan Johnson to head off his own line. The pressure was now piling in on the Hythe defence and eventually Folkestone were rewarded on 79 minutes with an equaliser as Joe Taylor turned in the penalty area and slid the ball past Godmon into the net. The visitors nearly forced a winner with minutes to go as a shot by Wright forced a good save from Godmon.

There were two chances for the hosts before the end as Palmer fed the ball through to Grant but he scooped the ball over the bar and then Jordan Johnson-Palmer blasted over. The game went straight to penalties at the final whistle with Hythe successful with their first four penalties but missing their next three and with Folkestone converting five it was the visitors who go through to play Greenwich Borough in the next round.

It was entertaining evening in a game which could have gone either way and Hythe can now concentrate on the league fixture at Lewes next Saturday.

Hythe sail to comfortable victory......

Hythe Town 5 Guernsey 1

Bostik League South

Saturday 2nd September 2017

Hythe ran out comfortable winners as they hammered Guernsey 5-1 at Reachfields on Saturday afternoon

It was Guernsey who were the first to threaten on two minutes as a cross from Craig Young found Angus Mackay but he headed well over the bar. Hythe were turned down a shout for a penalty a minute later as a great though ball sent Dean Grant forward. As he entered the penalty area, he appeared to be impeded but the referee waved away the appeals.

On a quarter of an hour, Hythe were lucky that Jerald Abogaye was in position as he headed off the line however only a minute later at the other end Kenny Pogue nodded onto Grant who headed towards goal but Young was on the Guernsey line to clear the ball away. With nineteen minutes gone Hythe had their keeper Nick Shaw, who was covering for the suspended Will Godmon, to thank as he saved well from Jamie Dodd. The ball came out to Matthew Loaring who skewed his effort wide.

It was Hythe who starting to take control of the game and were ahead on 26 minutes as Pogue pushed the ball past Guernsey keeper Callum Stanton and then poked the ball into the net. Within a minute Hythe could have had two as Charlie Webster had a shot blocked and the ball came out to Kieron Campbell who fired wide. The chances were all coming for Hythe with Wilson putting a cross that was headed over by Campbell and then Campbell got the ball into Adams who blasted over.

However Hythe were not to be denied as on 38 minutes Campbell had a shot blocked with the ball coming out to Webster who slotted home to make it 2-0. One chance for the Islanders to get back in the game just before half time saw Young fire a shot that was parried by Shaw and it was cleared away.

The second half continued with Hythe on the front foot and within five minutes of the restart they were three ahead as Grant centred from the by line and Pogue headed his second. A number of chances followed for the hosts as firstly Jordan Johnson-Palmer collected the ball from Campbell and fired over and then a pin point through ball from Adams found Grant who attempted a chip which he miss hit into Stanton’s arms. Another dangerous moment came for the visitors as a Wilson cross was hooked over his own goal by Sam Cochrane.

On the hour another Wilson cross was headed wide by Pogue who was looking for his hat trick. The chances kept coming as Adams got the ball out to Campbell who moved in but pulled his attempt wide and then a great move between Miller and Wilson finally saw Grant stretch for the ball but it went over the bar. Guernsey were to pull a goal back on 79 minutes as Thomas Dodds picked up the ball just outside the area and drilled a shot that deflected past Shaw. This seemed to spark Guernsey to press for a comeback and they did have a penalty appeal turned with ten minutes to go.

However the Hythe defence stood firm and made sure of the game with one minute of normal time left. Miller played the ball onto debutant Will Thomas who passed into Dean Grant and the striker slammed the ball home from close range. Deep into injury time the Cannons rubbed salt into the wounds as a cross from Wilson was fired into his own net by Jamie Dodd.

It was a satisfying afternoon for the Cannons as they moved up the table and Kenny Pogue went to the top of the league scorers for this season. This will give the team confidence as they go into the Kent Reliance Senior Cup fixture at home Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday evening.

Team: Nick Shaw, Jerald Abogaye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Charlie Webster (Ryan Palmer 62 mins), Sam Adams (Will Thomas 76 mins), Dean Grant, Kenny Pogue (Ashley Miller 68 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Pogue brace helps Cannons to win.............

Hythe Town 4 Ramsgate 1

Bostik League South

Monday 28th August 2017

The Cannons finally kick started their season as they ended up winning comfortably 4-1 at home to Ramsgate on Monday afternoon.

However the hosts were to start the half on the back foot as the Rams began the brighter. Jake Mackenzie was first to threaten as he drove a cross from the right across the goalmouth but there was nobody on hand to convert the opportunity. Adam Woollcott was next to threaten as he ran in but fired just wide. It was the visitors who continued to look the more likely as Tom Chapman shot weakly at Hythe keeper, Will Godman. The Cannons had to wait until the tenth minute before their first attack with Sid Sollis who jinked into the area and had his final effort saved by Ramsgate keeper, Luke Watkins.  Then a deep cross from Sam Adams found Kenny Pogue who directed the ball wide.

However the Rams were to take a deserved lead on twelve minutes with Tom Chapman pouncing on a defensive mistake and crossing to Alfie Paxman who slotted the ball home from close range. This seemed to spark the Cannons into action as Jerald Aboagye sent a ball over from the right to Pogue whose attempt was deflected into the arms of Watkins. The Cannons continued their fightback on 24 minutes as Ben Wilson put in a cross behind the Ramsgate defence with Grant meeting the ball and after a melee in the penalty area the ball was cleared away. Another Wilson free kick was headed wide by Sollis.

Then came the incident that lead to the equaliser as Aboagye put in a cross that found Grant who appeared to be brought down by Watkins as he tried to get his effort away. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and up stepped Adams who blasted his penalty home with 37 minutes on the clock. It was Hythe who were now on top as Kieron Campbell worked his way along the by-line before getting the ball over to Pogue who headed over. On 41 minutes Hythe took a deserved lead as the ball was played over the Ramsgate defence finding Grant who slotted the ball past Watkins for his first goal of the season.

The early exchanges of the second period saw the more meaningful chances coming for the visitors. On 49 minutes the ball was deflected by the Hythe defence into the path of Jake Munday whose shot was heading for the far corner but the out stretched arm of Godmon pushed the ball around the post. Ramsgate were unlucky not to equalise on 51 minutes as Chapman played the ball onto Rory Smith who slammed the ball against the inside of the upright and into Godmon’s arms. Munday was then to threaten as he hit a volley wide. However, the Cannons weathered the storm as an Adams corner was headed over by Dave Cook.

Hythe were to extend their lead on 63 minutes as Grant broke free and centred to Pogue who diverted the ball into the net from close range. Ollie Gray did have one opportunity for the Rams as he headed down but the ball went into Godmon’s arms but it was Pogue who headed his second goal on 68 minutes from another Grant cross that sealed the game. One more chance for a consolation for the visitors as Smith had a shot deflected into Godmon’s arms but it was the hosts who were now fully in charge with Ashley Miller creating the last opportunity as he played the ball into Adams whose attempt was deflected for a corner.

The three points were welcome and deserved for Hythe and this should create confidence for the next few games starting with Saturday’s home game against Guernsey which kicks off at 2pm.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Sid Sollis (Ashley Miller 56 mins), Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Dean Grant, Kenny Pogue (Mitchell Chapman 76 mins), Kieron Campbell (Ryan Palmer 62 mins).

Scorers: Hythe Town-Sam Adams 37 mins (pen), Dean Grant 41 mins, Kenny Pogue 63 & 68 mins. Ramsgate-Alfie Paxman 12 mins.

Cannons rue missed chances.......

Phoenix Sports 2 Hythe Town 0

Bostick League South

Saturday 26th August 2017

It was a truly frustrating afternoon for the Cannons as they dominated long periods of the game but still fell to a 2-0 defeat at Phoenix Sports on Saturday afternoon.

It was the hosts who were first to threaten as the lively Jack Barham was blocked well by Hythe keeper, Will Godmon, who came out to make the save. The next period of the game saw Hythe dominate the possession but they had to wait twelve minutes to have their first opportunity as Kieron Campbell sent the ball in to Ryan Palmer who tried to get into a shooting position before firing straight at the impressive Phoenix goalkeeper Steve Phillips. Godmon then sent a long clearance over the home defence finding Dean Grant whose bullet shot was tipped over by Phillips.

On 23 minutes Hythe were awarded a penalty as Dave Cook was pushed as he slammed a header against the cross bar and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Ryan Palmer whose penalty was brilliantly saved by Phillips stretching to his right at full stretch. The Cannons continued to press and it was new loan signing Sid Sollis who shot wide as he moved in from the right. Phoenix were fortunate to remain on level terms as Ben Wilson sent in a corner that was met by Cook but Jack Hopkins was on hand to head off the line. Mitchell Chapman put the ball through to Palmer but he hooked his attempt wide.

Phoenix did have two attempts before half-time. Firstly ex Hythe Town striker Frankie Sawyer miss hit a shot from the centre of the penalty area without threatening the goal and then a long range drivet from Tony Robinson sailed over the bar. Sandwiched in between Wilson unleashed a free-kick from just outside the area that was tipped over by Phillips.

The second half started with the same pattern however it was the hosts who were first to attack as Barham pulled the ball around the post on 49 minutes. Hythe were still creating the majority of the chances as Grant ran in from the right but he blasted wide and then Campbell broke through rounding the keeper but couldn’t get in a meaningful shot.  However Phoenix began to look more threatening as the half progressed. Firstly Hopkins pulled a shot wide and then on the hour substitute Dajon Golding played the ball into Barham whose hooked shot was well saved by Godmon. Within a minute Barham had given Phoenix the lead as he broke through slamming the home past Godman.

Hythe continued to attack looking for the equaliser as an Ashley Miller free-kick was tipped over by Phillips and then was unlucky as he got on to a rebound from a shot by Sollis and slammed the ball against the upright. On 68 minutes, Phoenix put the game out of reach of the Cannons as Sawyer came back to haunt his former club. He picked up the ball and fired home to make the score 2-0.  Hythe did go on to look to narrow the gap as Kenny Pogue neatly headed on to Grant but he couldn’t get a meaningful effort away and then the ball came out to Wilson who forced a good save out of Phillips.

It was all too late as time ran out for Hythe. The team must look at ensuring they finish the chances that they create as they entertain Ramsgate on Monday afternoon with a 3pm kick off.

Team: Will Godman, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Mitchell Chapman, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Sid Sollis (Kenny Pogue 65 mins), Dean Grant, Ryan Palmer (Ashley Miller 58 mins), Kieron Campbell (Jerald Abogaye 75 mins)

Cannons out of the cup.....

Hythe Town 1 Corinthian-Casuals 3

Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay

Tuesday 22nd August 2017

Hythe’s disappointing start to the season continued as they were dumped out of the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday evening at Reachfields.

Casuals started brightly and put all the early pressure on the Hythe goal in the early exchanges. Hythe keeper Will Godmon was tested as early as the second minute as he spilled a shot but was able to recover well at the second attempt. The visitors continued to press as Josh Uzun received the ball from Jorson Dos Santos but his attempt was chested away by Mitchell Dickenson. Jamie Byatt was next to threaten for Casuals as he broke in from the left but was denied by Godmon.

Hythe’s first attack resulted in the first goal of the game after 17 minutes. Ryan Palmer hit a shot that seemed to be covered by Casuals keeper Danny Bracken but the ball slipped through his hands and into the net. The rest of the half saw the more meaningful chances falling for the visitors. Byatt received the ball on the left side and blasted over and then he had an attempt blocked by Godmon. Palmer did have one opportunity for the Cannons as he sent a long range free-kick high over the bar.

Casuals were deservedly level on 40 minutes as Gabriel Odunaike broke free and slotted the ball past Godmon and into the net. One more chance in the first-half saw a deep Uzun corner find Jack Strange who headed over at the far post.

Hythe really began to come into the game in the second half. A neat one-two between Jerald Abogaye and Mitchell Chapman saw the former hit a blistering shot straight into Bracken’s arms. Dean Grant then sent in a cross-come shot that dipped just too late and went over the bar. At this stage of the game most of Casuals chances were coming on the break as Mu Maan broke through but was denied by an outstanding block by Godmon.

Hythe continued on the attack as Kieron Campbell was to fire a free kick from just outside the area over the bar and then the winger jinked in and out of the Casuals defence but his final effort was easily saved by Bracken. Aboagye had a shot blocked and the rebound came out to Campbell but he fired over followed by a ball from Aboagye that found Grant but he shot wide. Then came the moment that settled the tie. A Casuals striker found himself one on one with Godmon and before he could get his shot away he was impeded by the Hythe keeper in the penalty area and the referee rightly pointed to the penalty spot. He also had no choice but to show Godmon a red card. Up stepped Josh Uzun who sent his penalty past stand in keeper Dave Cook.

That goal took the heart out of the hosts as Maan sent a long range shot over the bar and then Reyon had a shot deflected wide by Dickenson. However Casuals made certain of the result a minute into injury time as Dos Santos played the ball to Ben Cheklit who slotted the ball home. One more chance for Casuals as substitute Tommy Smith forced Cook, who was playing his 350th game for Hythe, into a good save.

At the final whistle it is Casuals who will go on to play in the next round at Ashford Town (Middlesex) and the Cannons who must now concentrate on getting some league points on the board as they visit Phoenix Sports on Saturday afternoon.

Team: Will Godmon, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Mitchell Chapman, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Ryan Palmer (Kenny Pogue 86 mins), Dean Grant, Jerald Aboagye, Kieron Campbell (Jay May 89 mins).

Determined Hythe earn replay............

Corinthian-Casuals 1 Hythe Town 1

Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round

Saturday 19/08/2017

Hythe Town can consider themselves unlucky not to have won this game as they drew 1-1 in the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round fixture at Corinthian-Casuals on Saturday afternoon.

It was Hythe who were first to attack in a fairly even first period. Within the first minute Ben Wilson sent in a free kick from the right with Ryan Palmer heading the ball into Casuals keeper Danny Bracken’s arms. The hosts had to wait ten minutes to threaten for the first time as a dangerous cross from the right by Josh Uzun went across the penalty area but there was nobody to divert the ball towards goal. Former Walton Casuals striker, Gabriel Odunaike broke through but Hythe keeper Will Godmon was quick off his line to snatch the ball from the Casuals player’s feet.

Three chances for the visitors in quick succession saw Sam Adams fire a curling free-kick around the post and then Palmer cut in from the right but he curled his attempt just wide of the near post. The third opportunity saw the hard working Kieron Campbell send the ball to the far post where Palmer had his shot deflected wide. Casuals had an effort on 25 minutes as a long range drive from Jerson Dos Santos went straight at Godmon. At the other end Wilson sent in a long range attempt high and wide. The last chance of the half came for the hosts as a cross from Uzun was met by Jack Strange who bulleted his header wide of the target.

The second half started with Casuals on the attack as Dos Santos fired in a shot that was pushed around the post by Godmon. Hythe began to look more dangerous as Campbell jinked in but had his final effort deflected wide. However the Cannons were not to be denied and they took the lead on 59 minutes as Palmer won the ball and fed onto Dave Cook whose header was on its way towards goals with Mitchell Dickenson making absolutely sure to get the ball over the line. Within a minute Campbell threatened again coming in from the right but Bracken was on hand to save.

Casuals pressed to find an equaliser as firstly Ben Checklit hit a dipping shot over from the edge of the area and then Odunaike hooked the ball over the bar. Despite the pressure coming from the home side, Hythe were still creating chances as Adams cut in and shot just wide. At the other end, Checklit rifled a shot wide of the target. As it seemed that the Cannons had weathered the pressure, Casuals got the equaliser after 87 minutes as Mu Maan weaved his way into a shooting position and his final effort slid into the corner of the net. Campbell was to produce the last opportunity for the Cannons as he dribbled the ball into the penalty area but his final attempt lacked power and the ball was easily collected by Bracken.

It had been a gritty and determined performance by the Cannons where the team worked hard particularly in defence ensuring a replay at Reachfields on Tuesday evening with a 7:45pm kick-off.

Team: Will Godmon, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Mitchell Chapman, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Dean Grant (Jay May 82 mins), Ryan Palmer, Kieron Campbell (Jerald Aboagye 89 mins).

Scorers: Corinthian-Casuals- Mu Maan 87 mins. Hythe Town-Mitchell Dickenson 59 mins.

Hythe go down to injury time goal.......

Thamesmead Town 2 Hythe Town 1

Bostik League South

Wednesday 16th August 2017

Hythe were sunk by an injury time winner as they lost 2-1 at Thamesmead Town on Wednesday evening.

It was Thamesmead who started the stronger as their first opportunity came after three minutes with Thomas O’Connor blasting over from 25 yards. They were unlucky on twelve minutes when Jake MacIntyre fed the ball into Laurent Mendy whose back flick went just wide. Hythe first effort came on 16 minutes as Adams fed the ball to Kieron Campbell whose rifled shot was tipped onto the bar by Thamesmead keeper Lewis Carey. Ben Wilson was the next to threaten for the Cannons as he sent in a free kick towards the far post but there was no one there to divert the ball towards the net. There were opportunities being created at both ends as Thamesmead’s Dane Luchford scuffed a shot that rolled along the ground and into the arms of Hythe keeper Will Godmon.

Ryan Palmer was the next to create a chance as he worked his way in from the left but his final effort was pulled wide. At the other end Godman tipped the ball over the bar from a Mendy header. The hosts were eventually to take the lead on 31 minutes as McIntyre swung in a free-kick from the right and Mendy’s header went through a crowd of players from short range and before Hythe could clear the ball had crossed the line. There was one chance for the visitors before half time as Palmer sent in a deep cross to Campbell who forced Carey to tip the ball over the bar.

Hythe were the better side in the second half and were level on 51 minutes. Adams slotted a pass through the Thamesmead’s defence to Kenny Pogue who threaded the ball past Carey and into the back of the net. Hythe continued to press and it was Dave Cook who was to head over from a Palmer free-kick. Sam Adams was denied as his shot was deflected over by Joe Denny. At the other end substitute Alex Teniola had a curling shot turned around the post by Godmon. With ten minutes to go a Wilson corner was headed over by Adams. As the time ticked away both sides had opportunities to break the deadlock as O’Connor had an attempt tipped over by Godmon and then at the other end Pogue hit a snap shot held by Carey. However there was a sting in the tail for the Cannons as Thamesmead got a winner two minutes into injury time as Carey sent in free-kick into the Hythe penalty area. It was met by Scott Kinch who headed down and Paul Vines was on hand to slot home from short range.

It was an improved performance from the previous game but Hythe still came away pointless. They must continue that improvement into their FA Cup game at Corinthian Casuals on Saturday.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer (Mitchell Chapman 64 mins), Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Dean Grant (Kenny Pogue 45 mins), Ryan Palmer (Tommy Cooney 77 mins), Kieron Campbell.

Casuals come away with points............

Hythe Town 1 Walton Casuals 2

Bostik League South

Saturday 12th August 2017

Hythe went down to a hard working Walton Casuals team who came away from Reachfields with a well-deserved victory.

The early exchanges belonged to the visitors as they created their first opportunity after only three minutes as a poor clearance from the Hythe defence was jumped on by Isaac Sarapong but his shot went into the side netting. They continued to press as Josh Kelly had a shot deflected over Hythe keeper Will Godmon but it also went over the bar. Godman was to deny another attempt by Sarapong.

Hythe had to wait until the sixteenth minute before their first opportunity as Jerald Abagoye broke down the right and centred into Dean Grant who turned the ball into the side netting. Casuals got a deserved lead on 18 minutes as Josh Kelly curled a shot from the edge of the area into the top corner of the net. Their lead lasted six minutes before Aboagye pounced on a defensive mistake and crossed to Jay May who made no mistake side footing home from close range.

Casuals had a further attempt on 31 minutes as a Roscoe Dsane cross was headed down by Daryl Coleman but the ball bounced over the bar. Hythe continued to create some chances as Sam Adams sent a free kick from the edge of the area over the bar. Casuals then got the goal that sealed the game as a cross from Josh Kelly was met by Roscoe Dsane who slammed the ball home on 36 minutes. Hythe did have one effort just before the break as Aboagye pushed the ball into Campbell who slammed it into the side netting.

The second half started in the same pattern as Alex Kelly sliced a shot wide and then at the other end Ben Wilson sent in a corner that was headed wide by Mitchell Dickenson but it was the visitors who were creating the more meaningful chances as Sean McCormack forced Will Godmon to tip the over the bar. Alex Kelly crossed into McCormack who this time headed wide.

Hythe did press towards the end as a Wilson corner was headed wide by Ryan Johnson. With ten minutes to go Grant curled a shot wide of the target but things were to get worse for the Cannons as captain Ryan Johnson was sent off for a second yellow card near to the end of normal time. One more chance for the visitors in injury time as substitute Jack Battie had a shot held by Godmon at a second attempt.

It was a disappointing start to the season for Hythe who must now regroup as they prepare for Wednesday's fixture at Thamesmead Town.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye (Charlie Webster 69 mins), Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Jay May (Ryan Palmer 63 mins), Dean Grant, Kieron Campbell.

Cannons score four but lose.......

Hythe Town 4 Bowers & Pitsea 5

Pre-Season Friendly

Saturday 5th August 2017

Hythe gave away a 4-1 lead to go down 5-4 in their last pre-season friendly at home to Bowers & Pitsea on Saturday afternoon.

It started so well for the Cannons as they dominated the first half. In the first few seconds Dean Grant slammed the ball into the side netting. The fifth minute saw the Cannons take the lead a Kieron Campbell picked up the ball on the edge of the area and sent in an exquisite shot that curled into the top right hand corner of the net. Bowers got the ball in the net on eight minutes but Tony Stokes was adjudged to have handled the ball as he redirected it in and the referee had no hesitation in ruling out the effort.

The hosts were continuing to have the best of the chances as Grant had a curling shot pushed round the post by Bowers keeper Callum Chafer. Jerald Aboagye, now returned from holiday, pushed the ball through to Jay May whose shot from twenty yards went wide. The Cannons domination then paid off on 38 minutes as Jordan Johnson-Palmer slammed a shot that ricocheted off the post and onto Chafer and into the net to increase their lead. Before half-time both May and Ryan Palmer shot over the and then on the stroke of half-time May fed the ball to Palmer who passed to Grant who has his first attempt blocked and when the ball came back to him he fired wide.

The second half started with Bowers on the attack Ryan Mallet headed onto Stokes who also used his head but the ball was easily caught by Hythe keeper Will Godmon. With 48 minutes gone Hythe were awarded a penalty as a Palmer cross was handled by James Thomas. Up stepped Sam Adams, who put his penalty miss on Tuesday behind him as he drilled the ball into the net to Chafer’s left. Only seven minutes later a similar penalty was awarded at the other end as May this time handled the ball. Stokes calmly tucked the ball away to narrow the deficit.

However Hythe were to restore their three goal lead on 57 minutes as another moment of magic from Campbell saw the winger burst through the middle and then unleash a shot that gave Chafer no chance. However within five minutes the gap was down to one as firstly Bowers sprung the offside trap and Lewis Clark went through unopposed to put the ball past Godmon and then Ben Sartain slammed the ball home with the defence just looking on. A couple of chances for Hythe saw Keane Gillett get the ball into May whose effort was easily collected by Chafer and then another Campbell attack forced a good save from the Bowers keeper.

Things then started to really go downhill for the Cannons as all the pressure in the last fifteen minutes came from the visitors. Firstly substitute Jamie Brown curled a shot over the bar and then Sartain sent in a ball to James Thomas whose back header looped over the target. However Bowers pressure paid off as on 86 minutes Fahad Nyanja tapped the ball home from a cross and then in the final minute he got his second and the winner as he broke through the defence and planted the ball in the net.

It is hard to explain how Hythe lost such a comfortable lead to lose a game that should have been won easily. That is pre-season over and now the Cannons must look forward to start of the season proper at home to Walton Casuals (Kick off 3pm) to ensure that they don’t give anything away when they have dominated up to the latter part of the match.

Team: Will Godmon, Jerald Aboagye, Keane Gillett, Ryan Johnson, Matt Newman, Jordan Johnson-Palmer, Ryan Palmer, Sam Adams, Jay May, Dean Grant, Kieron Campbell. Subs used Mitchell Chapman, Kenny Pogue, Charlie Webster.

Cannons draw away ......

SC Thamesmead 1 Hythe Town 1

Pre-season Friendly

Tuesday 1st August 2017

Hythe Town had a disappointing 1-1 draw at SC Thamesmead on Tuesday evening.

The game started brightly for the Cannons who took the lead on only four minutes as a Ben Wilson corner found Jay May who calmly stroked the ball into the net. Hythe continued to press and a Wilson cross found Jordan Johnson-Palmer who blasted over the bar. Hythe should have increased their lead in the 29th minutes as Kenny Pogue was adjudged to have been brought down in the penalty area. Up-stepped Sam Adams but his penalty lacked power and was saved by Thamesmead keeper Simon Vanderhook to his right.

Hythe were creating the better opportunities throughout the first half as Adams got to the by-line and pulled the ball back to Matt Newman who headed wide. Pogue then broke through but his attempted lob went over Vanderhook and the bar. Two crosses followed from Wilson both finding May with the first one going wide and the second being blocked.

The hosts threatened in the 39th minute as they had to chance in quick succession when Ryan Minnott had an attempt blocked by Hythe keeper Will Godman and then Jerome Wade fed the ball to Minnott but he fired over the bar.

The second half started in a similar pattern to the first as Hythe had an effort on 50 minutes with Adams supplying a ball through to Wilson but his attempt was deflected wide for a corner. The pattern of the game changed on 56 minutes with Alain Akumwami collecting the ball outside the penalty area, unleashed a shot that sailed into the top corner giving Godman no chance and Thamesmead were level. The goal seemed to give the hosts confidence and they began to look the more likely to get the winner. A dipping free kick from 20 yards by home captain Tony Hill was tipped over the bar by Godman and from the resultant corner by Akunwami, substitute Elabbas Eltigani scooped the ball over the bar.

Hythe were still creating some chances and a Wilson corner found Mitchell Chapman running in but his attempt went wide. Akumwani was looking particularly dangerous working his way into the penalty area but his final effort went wide. On 76 minutes Thamesmead were very unlucky not to take the lead as a free kick from Hill on the edge of the area was slammed against the underside of the cross bar but was cleared away and then Akumwani hooked the ball into the side netting.

Hythe had two chances close to the end as firstly Ryan Palmer got the ball back to Johnson-Palmer who fed through to Kieron Campbell whose attempt went into the side netting. A minute from time Palmer got the ball over to Sam Adams who slammed his shot against the upright and Hythe had to settle for a draw.

Encouraging despite defeat to Dorking Wanderers.....

Hythe Town 0 Dorking Wanderers 1

Pre-season Friendly

Saturday 29th July 2017

Hythe Town were defeated 1-0 by Bostick Premier Division Dorking Wanderers at a very wet Reachfields on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Cannons who were first to show as Ryan Palmer sent in a shot that was held by the Dorking goalkeeper. Palmer was to threaten again as he continued to press down the left with a curling cross that just went around the far post. Dorking had to wait until the ninth minute to produce their first attack on goal as a cross was headed over the bar. A mistake in the Hythe defence was not punished as a shot was driven wide of the target. On 22 minutes the visitors were unlucky not to take the lead as a ball was lobbed over Hythe keeper Will Godman but also over the bar.

Dorking were creating the more meaningful chances at this time in the game as a free kick from just outside the penalty was curled just over the top. They were not to be denied as James McShane slid the ball home from a cross after 31 minutes. Hythe were holding their own as a neat ball through from captain, Ryan Johnson, found Dean Grant who tried to place the ball home but before it could reach the net it was cleared away. Kieron Campbell created another chance before half-time as he stole the ball from a Dorking defender but his attempt was blocked.

The second half started with Hythe looking for an equaliser. Campbell, under pressure, got his shot away but it went wide. The Cannons came closest to levelling the score when a neat move by the busy Jordan Johnson-Palmer ended with the midfielder finding Grant who slammed his shot against the cross bar. There were chances at both ends as Dorking drove the ball over the Hythe bar and then Jay May fed the ball through to Grant who fired wide.

On 69 minutes Dorking really should have increased their lead when they blasted the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score. With seven minutes to go Dorking fired the ball over the bar from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Hythe did have one more opportunity two minutes later as May pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and with time on his hands his shot was blocked by a defender. Dorking saw out the final minutes to hold onto the win.

Despite the defeat there was some real encouraging aspects with the defence including new signing Mitchell Dickenson looking strong and the midfield working hard to provide the ball to the frontline. Town now look forward to their penultimate pre-season friendly at SC Thamesmead on Tuesday evening.

Team: Will Godman, Charlie Webster, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Dickenson, Jordan Johnson-Palmer,

Cannons impress in win over Crowborough...............

Hythe Town 2 Crowborough Athletic 0

Pre-season friendly

Tuesday 25th July 2017

The Cannons eased to a two goal win against Crowborough Athletic on Tuesday evening thanks to another two goals from in-form striker Dean Grant.

Hythe dominated the first 45 minutes as they played some neat and attractive football. They were ahead after only four minutes as the ball found its way through to Grant who calmly lobbed his shot over the Crowborough keeper, Daniel Ellis into the net. They were to extend their lead after eight minutes as this time a Ben Wilson cross was headed home by Grant from close range. It could have been three for Grant a minute later but he curled his shot wide.

All the pressure was coming from the hosts with some neat interchange work in midfield. On 16 minutes Wilson put in another cross which was headed wide by a Trialist. Tom Loynes then picked up the ball looking to shoot but his final attempt was deflected wide for a corner.

The second half started with the Cannons on the attack as a Kieron Campbell cross found Ryan Palmer who headed into Ellis’ arms. However, Crowborough were starting to threaten as their first effort on goal came on 65 minutes as Zac Attwood had a shot deflected wide for a corner.  The visitors continued to press and Ross Treleaven pounced on a defensive mistake but his final effort went wide.

Hythe’s defence led by captain, Ryan Johnson remained strong preventing more threats from the Crowborough front line. Hythe did continue to have chances as a Sam Adams corner was headed over by Jay May. With 15 minutes to go a curling corner was headed off the line by Matt Newman. At the other end May got the ball in the middle of the penalty area but his shot was deflected over the bar over the bar.

Crowborough continued to look to get something out of the game as Sam Connolly headed over and then he blasted over the bar. Adams was then to set up May with three minutes to go but his header went into Crowborough substitute keeper Dan Smith’s arms. In injury time the Crows had a penalty appeal turned but Hythe held on to their two goal advantage.

It was a really encouraging performance from the Cannons as they get closer to the proper start to the season. Hythe continue their pre-season programme as they entertain Dorking Wanderers next Saturday.

Peacehaven & Telscombe 1 Hythe Town 3

Pre-season Friendly

Saturday 22nd July 2017

The Cannons eventually cruised to a 3-1 win at a damp Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday afternoon.

The game started with the hosts on the attack after one minute when they broke through but the ball was deflected wide for a corner. After a twenty minute period of deadlock and limited efforts, it was Hythe who had the next opportunity as Ben Wilson put a ball through to new signing Jordan Johnson-Palmer who put his shot over the bar. Hythe continued to attack as Ryan Palmer sent a looping cross towards the far post but the ball was cleared away. On 32 minutes Peacehaven had a golden opportunity as their striker broke free and forced a save from Hythe keeper, Will Godman.

Wilson was next to threaten as a free kick from the right was deflected wide for a corner. A minute before the interval Johnson-Palmer fed the ball through to Palmer who miss hit his shot wide of the target.

Hythe were in for a shock within three minutes of the restart as the hosts took the lead. The defence allowed the ball to get through to Marcus Richmond who fired past substitute keeper Joe Mant. This seemed to spark the visitors into action and they were level on 57 minutes as a dangerous Keiron Campbell cross found Dean Grant on the near post and the striker nonchalantly flicked the ball home. It was now Hythe who were dominating the game with a Wilson free-kick finding Jay May on the far-post but his attempt went just wide of the target.

Hythe went ahead on 76 minutes as Grant got his second as he lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper and then followed up forcing the ball home. Charlie Webster was unlucky as he ran in but his final effort was pushed wide by the goalkeeper. The Cannons sewed the game up with five minutes to go as Campbell ran into the penalty area, passing to Grant who finished to make the score 3-1 and get his hat-trick.

It was a good result for Hythe as they look forward to another pre-season friendly on Tuesday evening against Crowborough Athletic at Reachfields with a 7:45pm kick off.

Sheppey United 3 Hythe Town 2

Pre-season Friendly

Tuesday 18th July 2017

Hythe Town went down 3-2 in an exciting pre-season friendly at Sheppey United on Tuesday evening.

The game started slowly with few early chances for either side. The hosts were the first to threaten on eleven minutes as Ryan Johnson denied veteran striker Stuart King blocking his route to goal. Hythe had two opportunities in quick succession as firstly on 21 minutes Sam Adams drove the ball wide from twenty yards and then Jay May had a shot from the centre of the penalty area deflected wide for a corner.  At the other end Timmy Babbington was also to shoot wide of the target.

It took a special goal to break the deadlock on 38 minutes as Kieron Campbell moved in with the ball and patiently waited for the right opportunity to unleash an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area which sailed into the top corner giving Sheppey keeper Jordan Carey no chance. Sheppey countered as they had a long range shot that dipped over the bar. Campbell, who had been a danger all through the half, broke in again but this time Carey saved.

Hythe made a number of changes during the second half but started on the front foot as firstly Campbell shot wide and then Tom Loynes fed the ball back to Adams but he also shot wide. Sheppey brought the scores level on 50 minutes as Remmell Davis broke through firing past Hythe keeper Will Godman. The pressure now seemed to switch with Sheppey looking the more likely. However Hythe did threaten on the break as Adams forced Carey to tip the ball over from a long range shot. The hosts however were not to be denied as John Ralph on 66 minutes headed in from a cross from the by line.

With a quarter of an hour to go confusion in the Hythe defence saw King shoot over the visitors bar and then immediately at the other end a melee in the Sheppey penalty area eventually saw Dave Cook slam in a shot to bring the scores level. As the game appeared to be ending in a draw Sheppey got the winner with a minute of normal time remaining as Davis got his second converting at the far post from a cross.

It was a useful workout for the Cannons as they continue their build up to the new season. Hythe will now travel to Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday afternoon for their next pre-season game.

Team: Joe Mant, Callum Emptage, Keane Gillett, Ryan Johnson, Matt Newman, Mitchell Chapman, Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Jay May, Ryan Palmer, Kieron Campbell. Sub used: Tom Loynes, Kenny Pogue, Ashley Miller, Chris Saunders, Ben Wilson, Charlie Webster, Alfie Foster, Will Godmon.

Hythe Town 1 Tilbury 0

Pre-season Friendly

Saturday 15th July 2017

Hythe Town came out with a deserved 1-0 win in a feisty game at home to Bostick North, Tilbury on Saturday afternoon.

The game started positively for Hythe as an early cross from Ben Wilson found Keiron Campbell who got his knee to the ball but his attempt went wide. Tilbury had their first attack on four minutes as a corner was headed wide. Both sides were getting early opportunities as Hythe’s Campbell jinxed his way in finding Sam Adams who shot also went wide. At the other end Tilbury had a chance when a cross was tapped wide of the target.  Hythe were to take the lead on a quarter of an hour as Tom Loynes got on the end of a neat ball from Adams and was able to calmly slot the ball home.  On 28 minutes a cross from Tilbury saw an overhead kick go wide. The last quarter of an hour of the half saw both teams create few efforts on goal.

The second half started in a similar fashion with the visitors being awarded a penalty on 52 minutes as Ben Wilson brought down a Tilbury striker. This gave Joe Mant the chance to produce a fantastic penalty save at full stretch to his right to push the ball around the post. This was followed quickly by Mant spreading himself well to prevent an equaliser. On the hour Ashley Miller threatened for the Cannons as he attempted a lob over the Tilbury keeper but unfortunately it went over the bar. Very soon after Jerald Aboagye crossed over to Dean Grant who headed over and then Grant played the ball back to Kenny Pogue who pulled his shot wide.

Tilbury should have equalised on 65 minutes as they had an opportunity that went wide when it looked easier to hit the target.  With 15 minutes to go Adams put in a pin point ball to Ryan Palmer who surged into the penalty area with his final shot being saved by the Tilbury keeper. Palmer then put in a deep corner which found Pogue but his attempt was blocked. Tilbury did have one more effort which went wide before Grant had a shot held by the keeper and then Miller put the ball through to Palmer who was also denied by the goalkeeper.

On the balance of play it was the Cannons who looked the more threatening through the game and therefore were worthy of their one goal victory. Hythe will now look forward to an away friendly at Sheppey United on Tuesday evening.

Team: Will Godman, Jerald Aboagye, Ben Wilson, Ryan Johnson, Mitchell Chapman, Chris Saunders, Dave Cook, Sam Adams, Jay May, Kieron Campbell, Tom Loynes. Subs used: Callum Emptage, Dean Grant, Ryan Palmer, Ashley Miller, Matt Newman, Kenny Pogue, Charlie Webster, Keane Gillett, Joe Mant.

Folkestone Invicta 4 Hythe Town 1

Pre-Season Friendly

Sunday 9th July 2017

Hythe Town opened their pre-season programme with a 4-1 defeat in the hot summer sunshine at Folkestone Invicta on Sunday afternoon.

It was Folkestone who were the first to show as they opened the scoring in the eighth minute with their first meaningful attack. Invicta captain Josh Vincent sent in a corner. He found veteran midfielder Micheal Everitt who slammed the ball home. Opportunities were at a premium in the early part of the game but the hosts doubled their lead on 21 minutes as a defensive error by Jerald Aboagye was pounced on by Kieron McCann and he was able to slot the ball past Joe Mant in the Hythe goal. Hythe had to wait until the 24th minute for their first opportunity as new signing Ryan Palmer slammed the ball against the upright with his free kick from 20 yards with Invicta keeper Tim Roberts beaten.

The next chance came as Sam Hasler crossed from the right but McCann headed high and wide. Hythe did threaten two minutes before the break as Alex Mulrooney-Skinner jinked in but his final shot was weak and went wide. Another opportunity for Folkestone before half-time saw Ade Yussuf thread the ball through to Joe Taylor but he headed over the bar.

The second half started brightly for the Cannons as three minutes in the ball was fed out to Ryan Palmer whose shot was blocked by Roberts. The visitors kept up the pressure as Dean Grant got the ball through to Miller who shot straight at Roberts and then Grant himself sent a shot wide of the target. Roberts had to be at his best as he cleared away a dangerous cross from Miller. The Folkestone keeper was tested again on 66 minutes as he blocked a shot from the impressive Tom Loynes.

However, Hythe were not able to capitalise on their chances and Folkestone looked more likely to increase their lead as Euan Sahadow leapt on confusion in the Hythe defence and forced a great save from substitute keeper, Will Godman. Eventually Folkestone got their third goal on 77 minutes as the referee saw an infringement in the penalty and pointed to the spot. Up stepped Yussuf slotting his penalty into the right hand corner of the net. Within three minutes the hosts rubbed salt in the Cannons wounds as they got their fourth as Sahadow burst in from the right and slammed the ball into far corner of the net.

Hythe had an opportunity with two minutes to go to narrow gap as both Aboagye and Jay May had shots that were both blocked by Folkestone substitute keeper Dan Brabham. However Hythe eventually got a consolation right on the stroke of full time as Loynes fed a ball through to Asjhley Miller who calmly put the ball into the net.

It was a tough afternoon for Hythe as they started their pre-season programme. Their next fixture is next Saturday as we host Tilbury at Reachfields at 3pm.
